Okay, so I told you guys how I'm going for the interview on Monday in Columbia, MD. I'm terrifically excited about it - this has been 4 months in the planning. I'm excited, but I've got some items on my wish-list that if I don't get, I don't go. I told my direct manager yesterday, knowing full well he would tell my office manager today (the one I don't like - treated me badly, caused my stress levels to skyrocket, treats me like I'm damaged goods now, has no personal/personnel skills to speak of, etc - think Lumburg from Office Space).
He isn't even speaking to me now. I've seen him once today around the office and he shot me the nastiest look. Okay, I realize he's upset about me interviewing elsewhere - he's got every right to be - but to stomp around like a three-year-old and not speak to me and shoot me nasty looks? Excuse me, but you're a professional. You run an office. Your behavior and attitude and callous treatment of the junior staff has all of us unhappy as hell and actively looking for other jobs, not to mention bad-mouthing you to anyone and everyone we meet.
Keep it up, buddy, and I might even leave just because of you - 55K or no.

Maybe when you leave, you can pull him aside, reach into your purse, and say to him, "Here's the main reason I'm leaving," and then hold a mirror in front of his face.

He's being an unprofessional ass. It's like he's taking it personally because you're potentially making a career move that's in YOUR best interests. God forbid! Stupid dick.

Hmmm your manager must be like my grandma...when my bf told her he was leaving she treated him SO badly towards the end, shooting him nasty looks and telling even more than normal that he was doing a shitty job. But then also told him they couldn't afford to pay him anymore so he better find a job quick.
CRAZY FUCKING PEOPLE.

this is EXACTLY how my boss will react when/if he finds out that I'm looking around. It will be HELL. And I don't even have 55K keeping me here.

LOL I am totally going to do this at some point in my life. It's my new goal. I need a new mirror...

:sigh: This behavior is precisely why I didn't want anyone to know until there was an interview. Could you imagine how bad it would have been if I had gone in January?!
A bunch of us went to lunch together - w/o him - and we passed him on our way back. He just gave us all this real tight-lipped smile and walked on. Now he's in my direct manager's office with the door shut. I am just so tired of his nonsense.

I also question your direct manager's professionalism - he must have known that the office manager would react this way. Even if he didn't, why pass on gossip like that and start trouble? There is no possible way there weren't going to be hard feelings, even if your office manager wasn't an asshole. For what it's worth, I don't think telling your direct manager was the brightest idea.
I don't know if your company works like the ones I have worked for (consultant also) but if I were you, I would be very honest in my exit interview. Tell them everything you've told us.
If you do get the position in Columbia, you'll have to hang out with us. :)

Totally not my idea. The Columbia manager said the only way he'd do a transfer was if I was totally open about it with my direct manager - none of this 'smoke and mirrors' crap. Not what I wanted to hear, but if that's how he rolls...to get to Columbia, that's how I gotta roll. :torn: Trust me - very rough decision. This is why I held off for four long months

My direct manager told me up front he'd go to my office manager - felt it was his responsibility. Trust me, this is why I held off for four long months; I knew bad shit was going to go down the instant my office manager knew. (He's still sulking, fyi.)

I'm not sure if they do an exit interview during a transfer, but whenever I leave the company (for whatever reason), it ain't gonna be pretty, sister. I'm gonna be one brutal bitch.
And I'm always into meeting new people!! :)

just make sure to stay friendly with some of your Pittsburgh coworkers; this office manager is no doubt going to stick you on your review.

Done and done. Aside from Lumburg, I'm well-liked. ;)
