got a question for you gals. anyone experience break through bleeding on nuvaring. if so, did it ever go away permanently? i just started the nuvaring almost 3 weeks ago & after 2 weeks, i started spotting & now it is getting heavier. i realize that this is pretty typical with low dose bc, but i'd like it to go away & am wondering if it went away for you?

I'm on the NR--I started about 3 years ago, and I don't remember spotting too much when I switched over. That's why I liked it so much. Every once in awhile I spot now, but that could be for a number of reasons.
Have you talked to your doc about it? When I switched pills once I bled for 3 weeks straight then it suddenly went away.

Can I be a bitch and suggest the patch? I'll be honest, I have never had any of the bleeding or weight gain some of you get (yes, I know my body's unusual that way) but that one is supposed to have the least side effects.

Do you feel the patch? It kinda weirds me out....

I use the patch and it's awesome! I don't really notice it after I change the patches and I've never had one fall off. It is a blissful thing. Now if only there were a generic brand one so I didn't have to pay the expensive co-pay... but that's another issue. As for the nuvaring (sp?) I don't know much about that one.

i am not into the patch. it has more hormones, greater chance of failure (more apt to fall off) & my skin is much darker than the patch, plus i have sensitive skin.
i really do like the nuvaring. i just started it so i am gonna wait it out a few months & see if the spotting goes away. i hope it does because i have zero desire to switch bc. i am gonna ask the head nurse at work on tuesday about the likelihood of this being the pattern every month.

i had breakthrough bleeding in my 2nd month on nuvaring. i just completed my 3rd w/ no spotting.
i think it seems logical that your body would take a few months to adjust to new hormones.

Yeah, 3 months is pretty standard for any switch, I think. I'm on my 3rd month of a new pill and I'm hoping that things will even out now... Horribly morning sickness the 1st month w/ some spotting; no sickness the 2nd month, but had pd for 3 weeks; this month, who knows... Next week will be the test b/c that's when the spotting started last time.

I am on the patch and I should be the spokesperson for it, because i love it! I always forgot to tkae my pills on time and this elimnates all my fears. I only have to remember to switch it every week. My skin is also much darker than the color of the patch, and I wish they had a clear one at the very least, but my only problem has been itching from it.
I have a friend on Nuvaring and she says she loves it. I would think lower hormones would mean lower side effects...if it keeps up, I would def talk to you doc about it.

See, I worry I'd have an allergic reaction to the patch because I tend to be allergic to most bandage adhesives. Also, I'm very afraid it'd fall off from me picking at it - because I tend to pick at things a lot (which is why my scabs never heal right).

^ I pick at stuff too, but the thing has never fallen off, unless it got stuck to my jeans and ripped off. It's pretty strong adhesive. I just try and itch around it.

See that brings me back to my other fear - my adhesive allergy. I'll be starting birth control for the first time this cycle. I don't know how I'm going to react to the pill (or how well I'll remember it) so I'd like to have something in mind for if/when I call my gyn in frustration. :googly:

The patch gives you a ridiculous dose of hormones and can cause blood clots and other severe side effects. I was on the patch for about 6 months and I switched to the pill because of press coverage on the patch. When i first got on the patch my breasts did get almost a cup size so if thats important to you i guess thats a plus. The adhesive is very strong on the patch i went on a week long vacation at the beach and had no trouble with it falling off. it did attract a little bit of sand that i had to scrape off.
I just started nuva ring and so far i'm really happy with it. I wish they had designed an applicator with it though. i find it hard to get it all the way up where it needs to be and i can only get it in the correct position if my fiance helps me. other wise it will work its way down to where i can feel it.

The same can be said about ALL hormonal birth control.

I believe the side effects are worse with the patch than they are with other forms of BC.

I've been on the ring for six months or so and haven't really had that problem. I definitely had some side effects the first few months that I no longer have, like mild stabbing pain in my lower abdomen.
I did gain weight, but that may have not been birth control's fault...but let's say that it is because that makes me feel better.

I've used the ring for several months with no side effects or trouble inserting. I am totally loving it.

I tried to cajole my doctor into prescribing it, but no go - I was switching from a tri-phasic pill to a mono-phasic pill and he wanted something tried and true (whatev').
My friends who use the ring love it. My friends who used the patch hated it. And yes - there's significant research showing the patch isn't quite as safe as the manufacturer would like you to believe...when's the last time you saw a commercial for it?
