My dad's bday is coming up and he's the kind of dad that never buys anything new in years...I don't know what to get him, because he doesn't want anything but necessities; otherwise it's "wasteful". I feel like he doesn't want me to get him anything, because he's cheap and would rather I save the money than spend it. But damn it! I wanna get him something!
Any ideas?

My dad is exactly like this. He's so cheap, and is not in the least bit interested in new things.
I tend to take him places for Father's Day, instead. A small road trip, or even something like going and browsing a bookstore, which he loves to do, but rarely would think to just go and do on his own. Sometimes I'll come out and grill for him. Just spending time together is cooler for him than me buying him something.

My dad is like that too. Most of the time I usually just give him books. Other times I'll give him nice coffee beans or german food. Does he have any sort of hobbies? You can get him a book about them like on golfing or fishing or whatever.

Can you just make something?
I like to paint, and I used to paint a picture for my dad and frame so he could put it in his office. He loves that shit.
I agree with WS - take him somewhere, or do something with him. Like, take him to lunch or a movie.
