My friends and I have been into games lately. There are two we've been playing most often: Scattergories and Shout About Movies. Scattergories is good for the more literary set and sparks fun conversation. Shout About Movies has a great range of clips and doesn't require a board since its on DVD, which makes it really easy to play with a larger group. Anyone play these or other games with friends? It's a great antidote to the Saturday night slump!

the best party game by far is catch phrase. it's awesome because you can basically have as many players as you want and it takes ZERO set up. so much fun.

One of my friends has the Trivial Pursuit pop culture edition which is a good compromise - I like trivial pursuit but the serious kind with all the history and science questions is not always a crowd pleaser. The pop culture one has a lot of stuff that people our age know so it moves pretty fast. It has a DVD, too.

In college for some reason we used to play Taboo ALL THE TIME when I lived in the dorms. We'd use it for a study break on weeknights. I remember it used to involve lots of yelling - we played so much during college that I haven't been able to bring myself to open the box for the past five years...

drinking uno is even more fun.

When I was traveling, my friends and I used to play hearts or Gin on the way to Amsterdam or Prague. Man, those games could get heated.

I always liked Balderdash, because I am apparently a master bluffer.

Trivial Pursuit is a fave, as well.

My favorites are Trivial Pursuit and Catch Phrase. We always play Trivial Pursuit at Christmas with my entire family, it's great. I'm not such a fan of Scattergories because you have to be quiet for so much of the game. And I suck at Balderdash because I can't lie to save my life.

Ooh I like playing Taboo, although it's not often where I'm at someone's house and they break it out.

My personal favorite is Jenga, and my roommates and I tailored it to make it into a drinking game. It's kinda like the truth or dare version of jenga, but basically we took all the pieces and put a dare or action on it. So when you pulled out a piece, you would have things like social, switch outfits with the opp. sex, sit on someone's lap, never have i ever, etc. We had so much fun with that we even flipped over all the pieces and wrote dares on the other side too.

I second that. Catch phrase is awesome! We played it on a camping trip and everyone got involved, and we all ended up laughing hystercally!

When I was in China, I was in this group with 12 other people, all strangers pretty much. We played Mafia (http://www.princeton.edu/~mafia/rules.htm) , which was ace because there's no better way to get to know people than when you have to lie to them/accuse/backstab each other right to their faces. Plus it helps you learn each others names. I guess it didn't hurt that we played this at about 1 am in an empty bar with dirt cheap beer (in chinese city called Xi'an, ah memories....). It also made the 26 hour train journeys feel shorter.

Oh yeah, I learned to play chinese chess while I was over there too, but nobody here at home knows it which sucks.

Glad to see that there are other game players! These are all great ideas. What is Mafia?? Just played Shout again the other night - anyone know how the technology works? The host on the DVD was making all sorts of sarcastic remarks to our team (which was losing btw). Cracked us up.

Keep the suggestions and stories coming!

UNO never gets old.

I'll second that! One of the best things about my job is being able to play this with kids while we're in a counseling session. Since my kiddos are so young it helps them work on their colors and numbers too. Or at least that's how I justify it :p

My favorites are Trivial Pursuit and Catch Phrase. We always play Trivial Pursuit at Christmas with my entire family, it's great.

Oh, my family, too! I never knew anyone else whose family does this. We play at both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have these established teams that were formed sometime in the early 80s - we use the same teams every year. No one in my generation has any children yet but whenever one of us gets married there's a big good-natured argument between the teams to claim the newcomer to the family.

My friends and I go to this bar every Thursday for Trivia night. It's a good way to unwind with friends and get ready for another fun filled weekend!

A few years ago me and some friends were insane w/ the games, whether it was Rummikub, monopoly, Yahtzee, Boggle, Balderdash, Flinch... and I've always had a ton. My favorites are trivia, such as any of the Trivial Pursuits and the I Love the 90's game- though no one will play w/ me anymore ... apparently I know too much useless information. And I suck royally at Tabbo but it's still fun to play. or Scrabble. or Clue. and Balderdash. When we were little my sister and I would spend HOURS playing Risk since there was nothing better to do at my father's... and i'm not allowed to play Parcheesi (stupid game anyway ).

My friends and I play Dirty Minds. We don't actually "play" the game though. We just read the clues and see who can guess the object being described. The drunker you are the funnier it gets.
