I found this forum and I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I've been living in Pittsburgh for the past 2.5 years and can't stand it anymore. I've met a lot of nice people, but everything else sucks. It is basically a wasteland and I'm desperately trying to get out, but can't.
I took this job while my wife went to school, and I hate going to work everyday. I sit behind a computer all day and even during lunch no one talks to eachother. They just all go online. I'm lucky if I talk for 10 min with someone during a day and it is usually about weather or traffic.
I love climbing and skiing and would like to move out to Denver/Boulder area. My wife is doing pharmacy rotations all over the country and she'll be there for 2 months which is longer than she'd be here. I know I am going to really hate life when she leaves, so I have been seriously searching for civil engineering jobs in the Denver area for about 5 months. The response has been absolutely horrible. So if any civil engineers know of any openings for structures in the denver area, please let me know! Thanks!

I've been living in Pittsburgh
I'm sorry to hear that. ;)
I don't have any advice or info re: civil engineering, but I can certainly sympathize with wanting to get out of Pittsburgh. I've been living here for law school. This city is a bona fide shithole.
Welcome to the boards! You'll find a lot of support on here.

My dad and uncle own a civil engineering/surveying business. While it's small, they always seem to have a lot of clients. My impression is that it's a pretty good field--there's always a lot of work available. So I would imagine you won't have too difficult of a time finding a job when you relocate. :)
By the way, I'm also from Pittsburgh, and WB is my boyfriend, so I'm in the area a lot. It's not a very nice city, is it?

Check www.acec.org - the American Council of Engineering Companies has a directory of all the companies across the country that are members of this organization. You can search by discipline (i.e. civil) and location. I am also a civil engineer (well, structural) and have found that this is a good resource, especially for finding smaller companies. Most of the company listings have websites or other contact information so you can do a little background research on the company. Engineering consulting firms usually do NOT recruit, you have to approach them...so just put together a really good cover letter and start contacting!
Good luck!

Thanks for the encouragement and that website guys, I'll have to look into that. I guess I'm not the only one in the city without a steelers tattoo.

I live in Erie, PA and a lot of people act like they are from Pittsburgh. We have the most ridicuolus steeler fans, who act like Pittsburgh is their hometown. I think Pittsburgh is OK. It isn't great, but anywhere you go has its poitive and negative aspects (ie snow in Erie) but when it all comes down to it, home is what you make of it. Everyone is from somehwere right? I might not love living in Erie, but my family and friends are here as well as a good job, so I put up with it. I figure the best way out is to make enough money that I can travel 4 months a year. Wish me luck!!!

I wish you luck. It seems most of the people that stick around are due to family. I completely understand that, but considering I'm none of my family is from around here and I'm not too close with them to begin with, I feel I'm just in limbo waiting for what I eventually want my life to be like. That said, glad you've found a good compromise.
