Molly,
We should start e-mailing if you're game. I'm a 25 year old that moved to Austin two years ago. It'd be nice to meet some new people---especially female friends---my life's a bit testosterone loaded since I live with my boyfriend.

Hi you guys, just wanted to ask what you think of Austin. I would like to move in a year or so, and I was originally thinking of Raleigh, NC. However, I keep hearing so many great things about Austin that now I'm looking into that possibility as well. It tops the Forbes list and is supposed to have low cost of living with high job growth.
Do you all like living there? I'm looking for a city with a lot of cultural opportunities and single people my age (I'm 25). Would love to hear your impressions of Austin, what you do for fun there and how you would recommend it to others.
Thanks so much and have a great weekend!

I've since moved out of Austin to go Chicago but I must say this---the job growth information is probably old. In fact, that's why I left.
Austin is a great city---not too big and not small. It has a lot of fun things to do and other than the traffic (which sucks everywhere) it's got no big problems---except job growth. I just moved earlier this year and practically every one I met had been laid off or expected to be laid off. Just the other week a guy we knew got laid off for the second time in three years. My husband was laid off twice in a year. All of this was for financial reasons on the company's part.
Austin was a huge part of the tech boom of the 1990s and when all of the dot-coms crashed, the bust hit the area very hard. Tons of people are out of work there and they're all competing for the same jobs. Not to mention that UT churns out some very intelligent grads every year and you compete with them too. The big industries are tech and government and with most state governments being in a budget crunch--that isn't too great for job searches either.
So if you get a job and then move, I think you'll really enjoy yourself. But if you go there looking to find a job--you might not have so much luck.
