Well I was going to get my haircut today but the place I usually go was crowded and because they are usually pretty slow I hadn't made an appointment. So like a dumbass I agreed to wait and after 30 minutes I realized they were so behind I'd be waiting at least another hour so I just left and headed home. I was feeling extra irritable because I had too much coffee at work. So I spent 2 hours of time and extra gas and still didn't get my haircut. Also his place used to be 9$ for a haircut and suddenly it jumped to $14.

Just in general though, I HATE HATE HATE to get my haircut. I think is has to do with my social anxiety. I'd rather have someone smash my hand with a hammer every 2 months than get my hair cut. It's one of those things that I procrastinate about for 3 weeks before I actually get it done.

Also I'm kind of sick of my current hairstyle which I know is dated but if I got my hair cut with a shorter style I'd have to go more often for a haircut and seeing as I detest it that is not a good option.

However I realize a different hairstyle would be a good idea seeing as I'm trying to date. I think it might help me image-wise but I tend to be really indecisive about picking something out and I'm afraid it would look stupid so I keep putting it off.

So does anyone else hate getting their hair cut as much as me?

I have to agree it's irritating to get done. I will not spend more than 15 bucks to get it cut, which limits the options. I also have sucky straight as an arrow, thick hair that won't decide if it wants to be dark blonde or light brown and will absolutely not do anything at all in the morning but hang out on my head. Like, "Hey, what's up. I'm your hair. What's that? Gel? Good luck Lady!!! Spray now? Muwahahahaha!!!" So yeah, it gets chopped an inch or so every 3 to six months. When it's looking scraggly at the ends I go in for a trim. That's it. :p

I like getting my hair cut, but I always seem to end up with the same style. I used to go to this kick ass girl who was willing to take some chances with my haircut, but since I've moved, I keep getting the same boring cut. I ask for a slightly shorter than shoulder length cut with lots of choppy layers, especially around my face and I always seem to end up with a suburban mom bob, even when I bring in pictures.

I told the last person who cut my hair to not be shy about using the scissors and he said he didn't want to go crazy. Then, instead of using scissors to cut the layers around my face, he used a razor. I have really thick hair and a razor isn't going to do anything for me. It didn't look bad when I left, but when I got home and washed it, it was the same old thing.

And maybe it's just me, but WHY on earth do stylists think that it looks good doing that Carol Brady flip thing when they style my hair??? I usually end up leaving the salon with some version of helmet head with the ends turned up crazy.

I had a very similiar hairstyle/experience in high school/early college. Somewhere around the middle of college, I just got annoyed with it and started letting it grow. I get maybe a haircut a year if that. Usually I just pull it back into a very long ponytail or pile it on top of my head with a clip when I work, which at least gets rid of the suburban mom look.

Lately I've been tempted to slice an inch or two off myself (like just cut the bottom edge off the ponytail) but I've been resisting, because, well, I don't want to make it worse.

I have been with the same hair stylist for i'd say like 6 years or so. It's more expensive but she KNOWS my hair so it's totally worth it. And she keeps track of the highlight colors I've done in the past. :) I'm very loyal. My mom has been at the same place too, with a different stylist for seriously like 15 years.

I have a short style that is kinda spikey in the back. I wish I could pay 9.00 for my haircut. I spend $35-$40 plus tip, so I end up not cutting my hair as often as I should.

i am assuming that we are all talking about the hair on our head.....

anyway, if i go to my local babershop it costs $14 to get my hair cut, however it is first come first serve - so you could get there and have to wait for a bit.

i will sometimes go to a salon to get my hair cut and spend $25-30 to have have teh pleasure of the scalp massage and have an attractive woman run her finger through my hair. in the end though it is not worth the extra $$ as i usally go every 2-3 weeks to get my hair cut as i tend to like it on the short side........

I am horrible with styling my own hair. Most days I just wear barrettes because I don't know what else to do with it. Although now that it's getting longer, I wear ponytails and pigtails quite often.

I've never been wild about the dirty blonde color of my hair--I think it's boring--but I did so much damage to my hair by dying it in college that I think I'll just leave it the way it is for now.

Same here. I like getting my hair cut because I like feeling fresh and new with a new 'do, even if it's the same style. My hair feels lighter and bouncier. Although I do go back and forth from long and short. I love having long hair, but it gets to a point where it starts to just get limp and flat, so I get sick of it and chop it off to my shoulders. Then I pine for long hair again, hehe.

Lab, you should definitely go for shorter! I know that means you'll have to go get it cut more often, but I think it might be a good look for you. Maybe you can pick up some tips on how you can trim it yourself?

I love getting my hair cut, all those split ends go away and it feels....better.

but you should get it cut, man, If i remember right it's pretty long for a guy. Which can be sexy on the other hand....if you do it right.

I agree. I like the way it is if the picture I have seen was up to date, but I think a shorter cut would look cute

Or you can talk to a hairstylist and see what your options are. Tell them you want a new do that won't take many visits or will be hard to maintain, such as something that can grow out a little without losing it's shape.

Thanks everyone for the input. I really do have to look for a new hairstyle. It makes me so nervous and indecisive but I'll look on the net or something. I know the salons usually have books to look through but I don't know if I could make the decision spur of the moment. I know i'll put this off for now but I know I have to look into it. My ex used to bug me about this and give me pictures of celebs like ed norton, jr. that she said would look good on me.

This sounds like me, except that it's half-assed wavy instead of stick straight, unless I blow it out, which I prefer. If it were REALLY wavy, I'd go with that, but it's natural waviness state is that of a grown-out perm. Blaaaah. It's been six months since it was touched with scissors, and it's looking a little trailer park right now. I also won't spend a shitload on it.

I've had some version of the Rachel 'do in varying lengths since I was a sophomore in college, which feels rather dated, but, hell, Jennifer Aniston herself has had some version of the Rachel 'do in varying lengths since then, as well, so I guess there are worse styles to emulate.

Word to the razoring around the face, asm...not that it's really all that evident with my current grown out mop, but that's how I do it, too. Adds some interest.

Well being bald would certainly cut down on the trips to the salon or barber. I could just do it at home but I'm not real big on acting bald until I really am going bald :D

WS - you described me to a tee!! i have wavy-ish hair that's not gorgeous perm-like and not straight. so i have to blowdry it. i envy those girls that can leave their house with a great hairstyle without having to do much to it, particularly those with straight hair.

my hair is kinda thick and heavy and it has way too much volume. i don't know if it's the haircut i got or the way i blowdry that makes it more voluminous. anyone else have this problem? anyone know how to control it?

dazed, my hair is thick and voluminous, too...how do you blowdry it? Mine tends to not be quite so poofy if I blast the air down the hair shaft, instead of up and under. It smooths the cuticle, and makes the roots lie more flat. Using a paddle brush tends to make it lie more flat, too.

P.S. I also live in a ponytail. If it's not very freshly washed and dried, it's in a ponytail, basically.

WS - i tend to blowdry it down the shaft as well...but i do use a round brush. that could be the problem. but when i go the hairstylist that's all they use on my hair and it comes out nice!! i don't understand the art of blowdrying hair like they do apparently. but i'll try a paddle brush next time. thanks for the advice! :)

My roomate always cut his own hair and it looked just fine.

Me, I hate getting hair cuts so much that I always put it off *months* longer than I should.

Right now however, longer hair is getting back into style so I have a much better excuse to let it out. The only thing is that my hair seems to want to grow much faster in the back than in the front. It's like I have mullet genes or something. I'm due for a cut pretty soon, but I bassically have to go in there in say "only cut the back". Interestingly enough, that's pretty much what i said last time I went in there.

ROFL!!

I detest getting my hair cut...my hair is always miserable except for this very brief period when it's grown out enough to recover from the typical cut I get (I shoot for $10 cuts if I can) but hasn't gotten too shaggy yet. Not brown, not blonde, wavy on the ends but usually just appears "bent"...and it's acting like it wants to start thinning out on top ALREADY. I would rather go gray than bald, since I am sure my head will look like a deformed egg...

I cut my own hair. It looks borderline out-of-control on a good day, so I don't have to worry about being precise. Why pay $$$ for a clueless stylist to butcher my curls when I can do it myself for free?

i definetly went out on a limb and let my boyfriend cut my hair yesterday. I have curly light brown hair that I usually wear in spiral curls, except for the rare days when i straighten it (and then it usually rains - of course). It was so cute. He has this little hair cutting kit his dad gave him and he took it so seriously. It turned out pretty good, when he was done I angled the front myself and cut some random layers and I am good to go. Since I usually wear it curly it doesnt matter if its perfect. I just saved like thirty bucks. YES (napoleon style)

Words, Dazed, and Pisces - We must have the same kind of hair. I lost most of my waves a few years ago, but I still have the thick, straight hair that refuses to do anything. Long ago, I gave up trying to style it because it seemed to mock me. That's why a good cut is so important to me. It makes me look like I have a style. I usually end up getting some version of the Rachel, too. If I don't, I end up looking like I have a hippie style, with the long, straight hair with a middle part.

I think the next time I get a haircut, I'm going to the funkiest salon I can find. I bet they won't be shy about giving me the cut I want. Everyone else seems to want to go really conservative.

I forgot about this too, I have the signature middle part. It's so boring but my hair fights me on a daily basis. It's really fine but it's also very thick. I have a calic (sp?) on one side so side parts t'aint happening and there goes any hope of bang-like action. It's so annoying... Ugh!

Oh, I forgot about the cowlicks. I have one right smack in the middle of my forehead, right at my middle part. So no bangs for me. I can sometimes coax a side part, but only if I blow dry it that way and use some sort of product, like spray gel. And it only works about half the time.

Until I was 15, I used to have butt length hair that was all one length. It was constantly in a ponytail because I couldn't style it and was so thick that I used to get headaches. I like ponytails, but I wish I could mix it up a little.

get a haircut. i'm not very turned on by mullets & when did long hair come back in style?

i am getting a haircut this week. i am excited bc it always feels so smooth & nice when i get it cut. my sister-in-law's friend cuts my hair for a discounted price. she charges $70 at the salon. i pay $40.

i normally just go in for a trim, but last time i got 5" cut-off & more layers. i have curly hair & more layers make my hair lay nicely.

jen, words....does any sign of moisture make your hair frizz? i hate rainy days. and sweating at the gym turns my hair frizzy too. so forget meeting someone at the gym. i just want nice tame hair.
Yes...it's not curly, but it has wave in it...which everyone BUT ME thinks is great. It flips out weirdly and if I don't blow dry it, it just looks ODD.

When it was long, I had a HUGE ponytail. It was like a clump of hair just attached to my head. Not swingy and flowy...ugh.

Words, I think we have very similar hair (although mine isn't blonde naturally). Your hair looks very much like mine in your one myspace photo. I have a hard time getting my hair to lie flat even when I blowdry it. I usually have to go over it with a flat iron. Have you tried that?

What do you do when you let it go wavy? do you add product?

My biggest problem w/ my hair is that it gets oily fast. I think this could be because I started washing my hair excessively (sometimes twice day) and the oil builds up sooner now :(
