I just got my letter in the mail from the grad program I applied to.
Thanks for you interest blah, blah, blah, but there were people who were better than you for this years class. Sucker!!
I'm crying now and feeling like shit. I feel so crappy now. Like, nope you're stupid and we don't want you. Goodbye. I had a good feeling about it too. I had a good interview with the Dean of English and she kept telling me what a great writer I was. WTF!!! All indications were that I was a shoo in. I can't type much more. I'm crying too much.

Awww, Amy, I'm so sorry to hear that. :( Maybe you can still take some of the classes you were interested in as part of a non-degree seeking program? They don't know what they're missing!

You're in good company. I was rejected from five law schools. "We regret to inform you..." "We deeply regret to inform you..." "Unfortunately, our numbers limit us from accepting..." "We're sorry to inform you..." "Best of luck with future endeavors.." Yep, I've been there, and it's never a good feeling. It it makes you feel any better, it's often been said that if you don't get any rejections, you didn't aim high enough in your applications.
Just because you didn't get in to this one school doesn't mean you won't get into grad school period, right? Have you applied to other schools?

:( I'm sorry! But you haven't heard back from all of them yet right?

"Unfortunately, our numbers limit us from accepting..."
It was along the lines of this one here. large # of apps, limited places, there is evidence you have strengths to contribute to the program, but not now loser.
There aren't any other programs around here that I want to get in to. UCF is the only university around and I don't like it's program. Plus I'd have to take the GRE (Rollins doesn't require it). I really, really WANTED this program. Now I feel like a moron and loser.

Oh my gosh, I'm SOOOO sorry. This happened to me when I was applying to grad schools and I was rejected by my first choice--after I calmed down, I did call the dean to find out WHY I was rejected, what I'd need to do to reapply (which I never did, ha).
After you calm down and let it sink it, please call and find out why you didn't get in...you are entitled to an explanation.
*hugs*

Aww, Amy, I am so sorry. I also know how sucky that feels because even though I eventually got into grad school, I didn't get into ANY of my chosen colleges for undergrad due to my piss poor grades. I had to go to community college and some of my family members really frowned upon that (bitches!).
Just keep in mind that this does happen to the best of us and it will not dictate your future success. I went from a lazy underacheiver in high school, to a struggling student all through college and through some miracle I'm only one year away from getting my master's. There will be another road for you to go to to pursue your dreams, that school just isn't it.

I'm sorry - I know that sucks. I didn't get into my first choice law school and I was devastated. The pain WILL subside though and then you can pick up your chin and just say really bad things about that school for the rest of your life - like I do!

Thanks all. I still feel like shit and I'm sure I'll start crying again soon. I will call however. I had a person who IS in the program as one of my refs too (a mentor teacher at my school, the other 7th grade Lang. Arts teacher) She was so sure I'd get in too. And she knows all these people there, she seemed to think I was set. It's a really small program with lots of intellectual discussions and such.
Now I'm totally depressed about it all. I don't want just any old graduate degree. I wanted that one. There aren't any programs remotely like it around here. I feel like I did when I got rejected from U of MD. Like you are not worthy. Bye bye. I mean I did what it took then, I went to Comm Coll for a year and transferred, though I refused to transfer to U of MD after that. I got my degree. But the difference now is that I wanted that specific program. I don't know maybe I'll get in another time. It's fucking up my timelines though. I don't want to wait forever to get into grad school. I feel like an idiot.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this. But I'm sorrier that you feel so bad - you're not an idiot! You have a lot going for you, and you will figure something out. And this was an English program, not education?
I'm with Pisces - they should tell you why you were not accepted. A friend of mine had this experience when he applied to a bunch of programs our senior year or college; much to his surprise, they all turned him down. He gleaned some information from them, and the next year, he was accepted to a good school that has turned out to be fantastic for him.
Take care.

i've been there. i'm sorry. i hate rejection letters, generally speaking. they're either brutally honest or patronizing, or the wrong combination of both :(

No it wasn't an education program, it was the Master of Liberal Studies program, Ce. I don't want a higher degree in Ed. I think it'd be a waste of time and money because I'm not interested in becoming an asst. principal or principal. I want to teach college eventually (roughly 10 years or so from now).
It's a program dedicated to learning about great Western thinkers, with some Eastern worked in. Philosophy, literature, psychology, scientific breakthroughs, sociology, etc. I have my mole doing some research next week for me. She knows a professor there and someone who works in the office. She was shocked and surprised as much as I was and seems to think I applied a bit later than some and they cut the stack. It's a really, really, super teeny tiny program to "foster an intellectual discussion community." I'm moving on to being pissed now because I'd have to wait a whole year to re-apply (they only let each year's class start in the fall and you have to stay on track with the 6 core classes, one per semester for 3 years, to be in the program) and I was looking forward to it soooooooo much. Now how am I going to have intellectual discussions without annoying the crap out of people and where am I going to make new friends. GRRRRRRr

First, sorry Amy.
That sounds like quite the eclectic program - 2 years to cover all those disciplines? wow! I believe you when you say it's one of a kind. My program is small too, and it's one of the only places (besides here!) that I get to have intellectual conversations, so I've really enjoyed that. Someone along the way has GOT to see that you would have a lot to offer in that regard, and that they'd be missing out not to take you.
good luck, and for your sake I really hope you don't have to take the GRE!

I'm so sorry to hear that Amy. (((((((hugs))))))))) Rejection letters in any form are a bummer. Believe me, I've gotten plenty. As for what to do now, I agree with the others that you should call to find out what you can do to boost your app for next year. Sure, waiting another year before you can do what you really want is hard but if you're truly determined to go to that program you'll do it. what's another year? think back to may 2004. doesn't that seem not too long ago? it'll fly by. just work hard during this interim year to boost that app and stay in touch with your contacts at the program.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that, Amy. Is there any kind of "non-matriculated" program thing where you can just take like a class there without officially being accepted for a degree? A lot of schools (at least by me) have these for master's programs and it's a good way to prove to a school that you can do the work, etc.

Ok here is my two sense. I think you should take the GREs, what do you have to lose in doing so besides 100 dollars for the test? I took them twice and well did horribly, which is probably why i got rejected from a school i thought I really wanted to go to. Also, if this is really your dream program, fight for it. Call them up, the department head and ask them why you got rejected and what you need to do to reapply, class, GRE scores, etc. And reapply. I mean I still want to go back to school and I'm 26. Good luck :)
