View Full Version : Where I've been

As pi so eloquently put it in my Mother's Day thread, I should either come back for good or not come back at all. But I figured some of you might like to know where I've been the last few weeks.
I'm sure that most, if not all, of us QLCers are unfortunately quite familiar with the sensation of an impending emotional and mental breakdown. I haven't been pushed to that point in a very long time, but I reached it about 3 weeks ago or so. The sort of crushing misery and defeating despair that makes you want nothing more than to hide forever from everyone and everything. The overwhelming realization that nothing is within your power of control anymore. That's where I was, and have been - it's a pretty dark place. I thought I'd left it behind long ago, but it's always there...waiting in the dark, gnashing its teeth. What really matters is how well you battle against it from day to day.
Well, you can't win them all.
Guys, I was having heart arrhythmias from stress. I don't think I can illustrate it any better than that. No one ever really knows what the life of another is truly like, but that statement should give you an idea of how fucked up I've been. When your heart starts tripping out, it's time to take a step back. So that's what I did. I stepped back from everything that I possibly could. I stopped doing laundry, I stopped looking at our bills, I stopped coming to QLC. I know some will say that wasn't the best idea, because this sort of situation is exactly what QLC is meant for. But I just couldn't. I needed a complete re-boot of my mental systems. There are just some things that a person has to work out for themselves, and I needed the time and space to do that.
Thankfully, a lot of the things I've been struggling with over the last 6-8 weeks have finally resolved themselves. Some are still pending, but will be resolved soon. Others, well, they'll be resolved eventually. The point is, I'm feeling much more capable and able to cope now. I'd prefer not to blame any of this on my pregnancy, but I'm afraid the sad truth is that being pregnant had a lot more to do with it than even I understood at first. I'm completely unaccustomed to being this emotionally vulnerable, and it's been an adjustment for me.
All that said, I'd like to ask a favor. I'd prefer not to rehash any of the bullshit that's been going on that pushed me to the brink. Suffice it to say, it had a lot to do with my job, my car accident last month, and several other major factors that will be staying personal. I see no reason to reopen freshly healed wounds - I prefer to keep on coping and moving foward.
I'd like to say a special thanks to a couple of people. First to WB, who was super supportive and understanding of my decision to take a break from QLC. I knew I would be coming back, but didn't know when - and frankly, I didn't think it would be this soon. But I didn't think it fair to just disappear without at least letting the mods know where I went. Thank you, WB, for the support and advice.
Second, to my good pal Kelly, aka GMODC. I'm still in awe of the friendship and support I received on such a personal level. You helped me more than you'll know, Kel. Thank you.
Even though I consider myself returned to the boards, I may do more lurking than posting for awhile. Things change pretty quickly around here, and I need to refamiliarize myself with what's shakin' now. Anyone wants to PM me, knock yourself out. In the meantime, I'll be living life as usual.
Thanks to everyone. It's good to be back.

Midtwenty... I've not made much of a secret of the fact that you're one of the people on the boards whom I respect the most. I won't remind you what I think of your enormous inner strength, but I do want to add that I think there's often a misconception about the phrase "inner strength." People sometimes think it means having the type of personality that is never truly upset about anything and never suffers from despair or overwhelming feelings or emotional meltdowns. I disagree. Inner strength means suffering those really awful, overwhelming mental stress fests.... but proceeding forward anyway.... and having the sense to do what you need to do to take care of yourself. Even if it means lightening the load as much as possible.
Use these boards in whatever manner you want. You have friends here.

I was joking around!!! And yes, I wanted to know where you were, I was worried.
But yeah, I understand why you had to leave and I've been there too. I hope things get better and better as the days go by.
Did you ditch any of your friends because of being stressed out and pregnant? Because if you did that, I have zero respect for you.

Also, if you abandoned your home and ran away to New Mexico, leading everyone to believe you had been kidnapped, we also aren't gonna respect you.

Thanks WB, I appreciate that. "Inner strength" to me has always included the ability to recognize when you're sinking instead of swimming, having the sense God gave a goose and reaching out for a life preserver. Everyone has their own coping mechanisms. Mine is backing off and regrouping, then figuring out the next attack.
Did you ditch any of your friends because of being stressed out and pregnant? Because if you did that, I have zero respect for you.
I knew you were kidding pi, no worries. But it was still pretty relevant, joke or no. To answer your question, of course I didn't ditch my friends. My friend Renee has been my rock through all of this and the others have been super supportive, too. I choose friends carefully...I knew they'd be there for me however I needed them to be.

Mmmmm, mostly I wanted to pre-empt the "Why were you so stressed" question. I know it wouldn't have been a pry - prying comes from a place of selfish curiosity and that would not have been the intent with anyone here. But still, I just don't wanna talk about it.
We just need to move to Texahoma and everything will be grand Geez, let's go! LOL - no running away to NM for me. Although I do love Albuquerque.........;)

I'm not too into sweets either- I prefer bitter over sweet.
We had our 20 week ultrasound and from what we can tell everything looks great! Our little bean weighs 13 ounces, and the tech said our due date is Sept 26th. We did not find out what he/she is. If I had to take a guess, I'd still say girl. I mean the tech still put the baby right in front of our faces! We saw the head, face, whole body, legs, arms, little feet, heart, stomach, bladder......all so sweet and so tiny. He/she likes to keep one of the arms up by his/her head- super stubbon didn't want to move it at all.
So the pics I have are: big alien face, profile (with the little arm at his/her head), another alien face, and a tiny little foot. The sweetest thing ever....I am SO in love. :huge:

That is so funny - Little Man did the same thing during his ultrasound. He had one or both arms up around his head the whole time. We also got the same set of pics that you did. I love the little pic of his foot - it's so tiny and perfect! It just so happened that he was turned perfectly to get a view of his nether-regions and even a blind man would have seen it was a boy. Couldn't be missed. How exciting for you! It's truly amazing, isn't it? Don't you wish you could get an ultrasound like that every single day, so you could see your baby? The wait is so LOOOOONG!

They are just so sweet! I need to start on the baby book, I found one I like that I need to buy.
Do you know what your baby's heart rate is? Again, going on heart rate which is 145 bpm, our baby would be a little girl...... :) According to folklore.
Yes, I wish we could see him/her everyday. I did rent a doppler so that we can listen to him/her....and that does soothe me!

I have a pic of Aeryn. She had her legs crossed. The doc pushhed an prodded but she wouldn't budge. So in the oic I have she looks like she is lounged back with one leg bent at the knee over her other leg. you could see her on the moniter everytime the wand got too close she would kick up her little foot but she wouldn't uncross her legs.

All I know is that it's over 140 bpm. I don't know what the exact rate is. It gets checked every time I go to the doc and he always says it sounds great. I don't have the doppler or anything, but I find myself really looking forward to the times of day when he's most active and I can feel him moving around a lot. It's funny how you learn their routines so quickly.
So did they tell you it's a boy or you can just tell?
The tech asked us if we wanted to know before she started, and we said yes. But he was positioned so perfectly that we would have seen it, regardless. Which I guess would have been kind of a letdown had we wanted to keep it a surprise, but we definitely wanted to know. Imagine taking a naked baby and setting him on a glass table with his legs spread out, then looking at the image from underneath...that's what the ultrasound looks like. The tech even drew a little arrow pointing to his weenis for us - as if anyone could miss it! ;)

Oh- while we were in the waiting room, Greg was reading some pregnancy book that I swear was written by a coupla hippies. Anyways, it said in the book that many women find that giving birth is very sexual- very arousing- like having sex. And then it said that the husband should be really involved and caress the woman's nipples a lot cause it releases some chemical to help in the process....yadda yadda yadda. Has anyone ever heard that it's sexual or even similar to sex? Supposedly the woman's body releases a helluva lot of hormones/endorphines.....but giving birth close to orgasm? Ummmm....yeah, I'm not going to believe that one any time soon.
And don't mind my husband Doctor- he's just fondling/suckin on my hoots to get the kid to come out.

I have NEVER heard that. Having not given birth myself I don't know for sure but from what I've seen (including on a documentary last night called "In the Womb" - have you seen? You really should) it doesn't seem to be even remotely approaching sexual.
tina1979
05-09-2005, 03:14 PM
I know that caressing the nipples and orgasm can help bring on labor when it is in the very late stages. It releases a chemical that helps to stimulate/bring on contractions if I recall correctly. Where is Liz. She probably knows all about this.

I really liked "Girlfriends' Guide" because it's very real and to-the-point, but written with humor and honesty. Not clinical or dry. I also have "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and it gives good information, but it seems so impersonal. More like a reference book.

We will be taking a childbirth class in July. My hospital offers a short in-room instruction by the maternity nurse on how to breastfeed, directly after the baby is born; I will probably do that. Other than that, I don't plan on taking anything else. Lamaze I don't really feel I need, because I learned breathing techniques for pain management a long time ago. Changing diapers and whatnot...no prob. I should be doing some yoga or something, but no time. I end up walking a lot and I'm waiting for it to be warm enough to open our swimming pool. THAT will be great.

How nice! I've heard that swimming is so wonderful because it takes all the weight off! :)
Exactly. Ahhhh...I'm SO looking forward to it. And of course, low impact so you don't have to worry about hurting yourself. My back is going to thank me. ;) Now, if I can just drag my mom out of 1977 and convince her that swimming is perfectly safe..........

Too funny! My mom is the opposite- I'm LAZY compared to her. She told me that during her 9th month she played volleyball!

I attribute her mad skills to growing up on a dairy, being up by 5 everyday to milk the cows, being able to lift 50lb hay bails, and being trampeled by a herd of cows when she was 12. She turns 60 this year and aside of a little gut- my mom is ripped.

My younger brother went to school with a girl named Martini Olive Pitts. No joke. Her younger sister's name is Peaches Pitts. That is cruel if you ask me!! I went to school with a guy who's fist name is Rocky middle name Road. People are crazy. I love your girl's name Heather!

I know that caressing the nipples and orgasm can help bring on labor when it is in the very late stages. It releases a chemical that helps to stimulate/bring on contractions if I recall correctly. Where is Liz. She probably knows all about this.
yup. i know about this. nipple stimulation & sex can start labor. prostagladins in semen & stimulating nipples help release oxytocin- the love hormone (pitocin is the artifical form of it). so ladies, remember that when you are hoping to go into labor soon.

The worst I ever heard of was a woman who had twin girls and named them Sifalis and Gonora. She had seen "syphilis" and "gonorrhea" on a medical chart in the hospital, didn't know what it meant, but thought they sounded pretty. Then I also heard of a woman with twin boys who named them Le'mongelo and Or'ongelo (lemon jello, orange jello). I'm sorry, but would you not kick your mother's ass for some shit like that when you got grown?
