So a few weeks ago I was shopping in Target with a friend and tried to pay with a check and it wouldn't go through. I got really embarrassed and confused, but I'd had a problem the day before using the atm, even though there was money there, so I shrugged it off. Then Thursday, the same thing happened again at a different store. So I called the number on the receipt, and the explanation was: I don't have enough of a check writing history. So apparently, because I don't ever write checks, I can't pay with a check anywhere.

How screwey is that? Normally I do just pay with my debit card, but at the moment I have no $$ because I'm waiting for 2 large checks to clear and $300 of an online purchase that the guy decided not to sell after all to be returned back to my acct. So now I have to go figure out places where I can start a check writing history. The representative suggested Walmart  .

didn't know that was possible, unless it is the same thing is when a store, company etc. tells you they only take check numbered after 500. if that's the case, when i opened my account the banker started my checks at 1000. could you order higher checks from your bank?

Just use a credit card. Pay that with a check!!!!! Always pay off everything when the bill comes in. So many people in their 20's don;t understand that just because they have a credit card does not mean they have to buy stuff they don;t have money for. I use a credit card for as many things as I can. I just make sure that I can afford something before i charge it....with that method i have never missed a payment.
