I am a 24 year old customer service rep.working part-time at a local community bank. I got more hours and am learning more things but I am bored and not challenged enough...I am thinking of going back to school to get my masters degree in accounting (got my Bachelor's a few years ago) but can't afford it currently...still living at home but want to become more independent and self-supportive. And I need a full-time job to pay for bills and future school debt. I am not sure if I want to stay in banking or accounting or try something new??

My recommendation for anybody concerning their career is to try to turn an interest/hobby into their career. I know it's easier said than done. Life is a lot less miserable when you at least slightly enjoy your job.

m12, I'm assuming your bachelors was in accounting. Why aren't you doing that? No offense, but customer service is a one-way ticket to nowhere in most companies.

Angyl is right, there are times you just have to cut through the bullshit and ask yourself "Is this really what I want to do? How can I change my situation?", then you do it.

Accounting isn't a fun career.

I am a CPA and have worked in this field since I graduated from college over 9 years ago.

Does it pay pretty well? Yes.

Is it interesting? No.

I describe accounting this way:

In high school, I played baseball. I enjoyed playing because I was a part of the action and was around people. In terms of a career, I liken playing baseball to being in sales or operations for a company. Those are the people who are involved in making/creating the score.

Accountants, on the other hand, are like score keepers. They watch what is going on in the company (the game being played) and they keep track of the score. It is all about details, and I feel like I don't spend enough time looking at the big picture.

Why don't you look at other fields withing accounting like auditing, investigations, forensic accounting.

you get to work WITH people and its not so numbery. I work for audit services and auditors are always out on field trips. And mind you these people could be making a lot more with their own provate practice. I myself am considering being an audit tech since I am quite good at math.

but yes like others said, do not go for your masters since you dont have a good job. Try looking for a job in accounting first, and see if its good for you.

Also, there are loans available to pay for school. People don't like to take them out but I think it is inevitable in this day and age. Plus you can always consolidate and tailor a payment plan when it comes time to pay them back. I owe $70K and I am a Social Worker so I really have a lot of debt with not a whole lotta income. There are also specialized programs so you can go to school but work at the same time. I don't know too many people our age that are left anymore that can just go to school, especially grad school, and not have to carry a full-time job. If accounting (or anything else) is what you really want to do, I would research schools you are interested in attending and start going to open houses/dept. persons and ask these questions.
