Does anybody collect these?
Ok, maybe it's silly but I do. It came as a result of my now frequent trips to the US. I'd come home and have change that I didn't want to mix with my Canadian change so I'd put it in it's own cup. Then I started noticing I had a few of these state quarters. I thought "this is neat, maybe I'll give these their own jar too, while I'm at it".
So anyways, it is kind of a neat little thing to do. Mostly because it take nearly no effort at all and is very cheap. So far it has costed me $2.25 USD. All you have to do is look at your change and catch them, it's kind of like a scavenger hunt. It crossed my mind to do so when buying pizza on Sunday, and voila, Minnesota. I now have:
-New Hampshire
-Wisconsin
-Louisiana
-Texas
-Delaware
-Mayland
-Florida
-Minnesota
-Maine
Incidently, back in 1992 when Canada turned 125, there was a set of provincial/territorial quaters issued here. So while watching out for american quaters in the change drawer (constructed as an ashtray), I found a couple of those. So I started putting this set in the same state quarter cup. I now have
-Ontario
-Nova Scotia
-Northwest Territories
I think I'm turning into an old man. Anyways, does anybody else collect these?

My mom used to collect those quarters when they first came out several years ago. She was so into it, so I bought her one of those map things of the US that you put the quarter in for each state. Yeah.. now that map is beaten and thrown somewhere in the garage! I think she or my brothers ended up taking the quarters out to use for change!

Have you ever seen a Sacajewea dollar?

Hehe, I suppose that's a bit funny, but hey it's not the catch, it's the thrill of the hunt right? I'm sure she had fun doing it. I had an Ohio one I used at a bridge toll I think. Of course, I'm not going to speand them when I get back home because they're foreign currency then.

I get a set from the US mint each year at Christmas, which is nice because I don't have to worry with saving them throughout the year. I used to keep a Texas quarter in part of my wallet for some reason, but I think I used it for a toll the other day. I read in Parade magazine that something like 100 million people collect the quarters.

Ugh!! For godsakes why?
That's one thing I really don't like about visiting the US. I get stacks of paper money in my wallet and it's really hard to keep track of how much money I have on my at any given time. (Plus feeding bills into vending machines is a pain.)
Here, you pat your pocket and you know you have speanding/snack money if there are a few $1 and $2 coins (or feed them into a pouch in your wallt you can feel with your fingers). If you're carrying more than that all it takes is a quick glance, you see blue you're carrying a five, purple a ten. More than a little bit of green and you've got a stack of twenties so you're covered for whatever. You NEVER have to finger through your wallet and count. I fealt like an idiot in New York this weekend when I had to finger through the cash I was carrying "Hmm, do americans do this faster than I can?". Or at very least kind of vain: Look how much I love to handel my MONEY!!!
Nope, our system works better.

Ok, ok I don't hate it. I don't know, for some reason I feel richer with bills (even if it's all 1s) rather than a pocket full of change. I just don't deal with change, I throw it all in a jar.

My Dad gave my brother a couple of new American 100's for christmas. I think the new US money, with it's colour for security but attempt to maintain the monochrom green, looks like it's been through the wash in sombody's trousers.

I'm thinking it's not a matter of whether one is better or not, but what we are conditioned to. It seems like y'all have the same sort of system, you look at colors where I look at pictures of past presidents--Oh, there a few George's so that's a few dollars, Hey, Andrew Jackson WHOO HOO Benjamin Franklin!!! :p (Yeah, that's on a really good day)

Okay that just sounds wicked funny for some reason...like giving someone Monopoly money...

Ha ha! Me too! But it's really easy to filter out the big stuff from the small stuff. The later goes in a jar (or my car for parking change), the former goes in my pocket for coffee. Or beer.

I worked in a foreign money exchange in the airport for about 5 years. I have to agree with dead. I think our money is just boring!!! I like Canadian, but I LOVE Australian. Thier money is very pretty and its made of a plastic-y material.

Exactly, see none of the presidents are printed along the edge of the bill, were as from the edge I can see its colour. I don't even have to touch it.
For instance, I look in my wallet right now and see black. This means I have no money at all.

Australian money is pretty cool. My Dad joked that it's so you can get really really drunk and piss your pants and not loose any cash.
My australian friend rather vehemently asserted that no, it was for going swimming.

Isn't the knock against our dollar bills that they are all the same color so unless you look at the face and number, they aren't all that distinguishable from each other? I guess we're trying to follow the multi-colored route with the 20 dollar bill. I actually have a Canadian five dollar bill in my wallet with Prime Minister Wilfid Laurier. Happy looking fellow he was!

Did you see the Conan O' Brian from Toronto where Mike Myers showed that he looks like spock if you draw on hair?
Speaking of foreign currency in wallets, I came back with a $1 with a "where's george.com" stamp on it. Has anybody seen this site?

lmao- stop making fun of our presidents err prime ministers :p
Here's why I hate American money: Once in California I paid a corner store dude 100 dollars(or 50 i think) for a pack of chips when it was supposed to be 1 dollar and dashed out of there and almost got a heart attack but the guy was waiting to give me change back.

Let me dork it up a bit and ask which quarters, asthetically, do you like?
New Jersey is pretty nice - GW crossing the Delaware (maybe I am being biased)
Maine is super nice with the lighthouse...I really like that one.
Missouri is cool with the Arch.
Here is a listing if you can't remember what they look like.

You guys who collect the quarters should just go on Ebay and buy up rolls of the silver ones if you can get them for under 30 bucks.

I love the state quarters! Someone gave me one of those books you stick them in and I did start collecting them though I'm a bit behind. I think Conn. is so pretty with that tree.
I have tried the where's george thing also, although I have never possessed a bill that anyone else has actually entered in since I started going to that site. I don't spend much cash, though - I go to the ATM maybe once every six weeks and get $100 out. I pay for as much stuff as I can with a credit card since we get cash back on ours, and cash is only for the rare occasions when I go out to lunch or for drinks, or have to pay for parking or something like that.
I agree with Deadend - I kind of like having coins in larger denominations when I am traveling - had a blast with 1 and 2 Euro coins on my trip in March. I don't operate the same way in the US though - those $1 coins drive me nuts here at home! God forbid I go to the vending machine at the post office and pay for $14 worth of stamps with a $20 bill and get six of those suckers back - I ALWAYS forget and always end up with a whole handful of them. LOL - One time I collected a whole bunch and paid for something that cost almost $20 entirely in change - the person looked at me like I was crazy but then realized that it was dollar coins and not quarters.
