View Full Version : Not feeling "the love" on QLC lately

It is annoying coming home from a frustrated day just wanting to read about some other familiar faces on here and having to deal with people stirring up shit. I know this would probably create more work and I am just throwing ideas around but is there a way to screen more who is able to join the site? Sorry for another rant but I am just not feeling "the love" lately on this site.

Don't really know specifically who you are talking about but I do know who you aren't talking about.
Weirdbrake, first of all, although we knew well in advance of his departure. He made this place great and it'd differant without him.
Desiderata hasn't been posting either. I think he's at sea. Great fellow Canadian. maybe my viewpoints are highly cultural in that case because he always has a great way of saying what I want to say first so as that I don't have to.
And1; who I didn't always agree with, but frequently did, and also was the best for making light in overly wieghty threads. I thought he was our new mod? Where has he been lately?
Well, there is a big QLC roster rollover going on here, that's to be sure.

I'm not really sure what your concerns are, either, specifically. But there is always an ebb and flow as people come and go. I don't really see a huge change except that some regular posters are occupied with other things right now, and we got troll-bombed a few days ago. The posters who are around are contributing just as they always have, but it's by nature a community in a state of fluctuation. I'm not sure where the lack fo "feeling the love" comes from.
P.S. Des isn't at sea, he just has fewer internet hours w/ his job switch. I miss him, too.

Hey I wish we had more of our NICE regular posters around more often vs. the latest select, very select I might add, few who have joined as of late :googly: :googly: :googly: .

People are usually cold at first and then they warm. Let's welcome everyone new. It's just the winds of change.

Well, with the psychotic trolls that visited last week, I think we simply are a lot more guarded right now.
I think it'd be a good idea to have a screening committee of some sorts, simply cause our lovely mods can't be around 24/7. Again with the psychotic trolls, by the time we got around to getting rid of them, a lot of damage had been done.
I just don't know if the screening committee would actually be a feasible idea, though.

Yeah I was on vacation last week and missed the trolls too. What did they do? Did they have long colored afros, no clothes on, and bring luck?

These trolls came on, started posting just plain rude posts, got our IM addy's and sent IMs that included calling people sluts, they then got BLOG site addy's and managed to take those out, and even logged onto myspace.com and tried attacking that way.
These said trolls were from another site & had a plan to crash this site every Thursday. Whether or not they actually do this, I don't know.

I don't know if this board has this capability, but on ezboard, they have this thing called Membership By Approval. Basically, you request to join, and the mods will decide whether or not to accept you or not. It makes it more work for the mods, but you are able to screen everyone that joins. Another hard part about this is that someone may appear to be normal at first.

Agreed and some people really have a lot of time on their hands to make up a fake personality.

Guys, the screening idea sounds great but I don't see how to make it could be implemented. Any chance there's a filtering tool for mods here? I know on some other boards I've been on there's been an option to delay the posts of new people/those with very few posts until it's been approved by a moderator. I don't know your setup here though or if that'd even be possible but if so it could solve the troll problem.

For me I just look at it like people will come and go. Sometimes life events happen and you can't post for awhile, or you post an insane amount because you're bored or at a crummy job. Whatever.
I feel the same way about trolls. They come and go and shit happens..I'm not going to let it bother me.

I agree with the people come and go aspect of things. Between registering in '01 and now, I've had a couple of whole YEARS where I wasn't on the boards. If people aren't here, I miss them in community, but if I'm tight with them, I can always e-mail, IM, or talk to them on the phone, so it's not like they're gone to me.
For what it's worth, though, Jen, yours is a presence I miss.

I actually enjoy heated debates. I haven't participated in them because others say what I want to say but much more eloquentally, but reading them is a great procrastination tool. I have been on websites where everything is puppy dogs and rows of smiley faces (and huge, ugly avatars, glad this site doesn't have them!), and frankly they make me a little pukey.
That said, I have seen another board with similar software to this one that has a member's only forum, viewable only to those who pay a fee. Everything else is public viewing although you do have to be registered to post even there.

I hope I don't bother anybody, since I'm new here. I'll get around to post my own QLC in awhile, when I figure what to say. I think comparing to other boards I stumbled upon this one is quite a safe haven and I find the regular posters here to be exceptionally smart and reasonable people who wouldn't waste their time on useless insult exchanges. There's the timezone difference but it's not a prob - when I log on at 7 am here it's afternoon for stonemonkey and around my lunch hour winney wakes up (early bird ;) ) I like it here. I hope it's fine I hang around.

I don't think most people are bothered by new posters, as a rule.
It's people who seem to post mainly to cause conflict, i.e. trolls, who are being targeted here, I think. I don't think newbies should feel like they're not welcome.

Awe, I totally feel the love guys thanks...
and yah, not at sea, but 14 hour work days = not much free time, and in the days off, catching up on errands and such... plus a house guest in my computer room makes internet usage less available. Though that should only be for another month or two. Tack on an ever useless job hunt, barely time to sleep but... Believe me guys, miss you all tonnes, and its way weird to not be on... definately gonna try and make more of an effort, just wish I wasn't behind a firewall at work :(
