Whats up everyone, newbie here, hope I posted this in the right place. My name is Dee from Upstate, Ny. I just finished school back in December from a school in York, Pa (what a dump that place is....lol)..and just moved back home in May to Upstate, NY. I have an interbiew coming up in Frederick, Maryland, which seems to be a pretty decent job, so theres a possibility thatI might be relocating down that way. I looked up some quick info on the area, and from where I am in NY its pretty much the same as far as population wise, slightly smaller. But I just want to get an idea of what the people are like, the nightlife, women (kidding, kind of ;): )what kind of activities are down there, all that good stuff....Kind of what to expect when I go down there for the interview, and if I do get the job and move down there. Where I went to school in York, PA there was a lot of problems with racism, and a lot of country redneck types, and me being a young black man, dont need that kind of stress...lol...also I noticed cost of living isnt too bad, but what areas shouldI look for where there will be people sort of my age and rent wot be ridcuilous. ....thanks for the help...

also, does anyone work for Cintas Corp. cause that who I'm interviewing with....

Ooh Frederick? My sister lives there and it is sort of redneckville. In fact it's often referred to as Fredneck. I'm not sure it'd have as much racial tension as York, PA does (my aunt lives in Hanover and works in York and you're right it is kind of bumfuck). Frederick is OK. It's not horribly small and about an hour down (maybe more with traffic) 270 you can get to DC and cool stuff to do. Baltimore is around 45 minutes away on 70 (long, boring drive too btw). It's pretty and scenic though. It's got your basic chain shops and strip malls and places to live. Historic downtown Frederick is cute. I wouldn't personally like living there but it's not the worst place in the world. I grew up in Maryland (Laurel mostly) and it's getting pretty expensive to live down there (hence the move to Florida) but Frederick is still fairly decently priced for the general area. Good luck with your interview. Check out the town though before you make any decisions. It's not an area where it's cheap to move around. But if you did move and found you hated Frederick, Baltimore isn't far away and depending on your field you might find work around there and it's a fun, cool easygoing town.

Where in upstate NY are you from? I grew up in Ballston Spa, just near Saratoga. I love it there but I totally can't breathe due to my awful allergies. I love to go home in the fall though, its so nice then.

Im from Utica, NY...pretty similar to Frederick as far as I can tell population wise....yeah this time of year is the worst, even though the weather right now is nice...I have allergies too and for the last 3 weeks it has been a total nightmare.....

after googling "fredneck" Im getting the impressions that Frederick is known as being more of a consertive country redneck kind of area, which worries me...lol...

I think you should seriously consider a more metropolitan area. Coming from a rural area, and having gone to school in PA, maybe you are ready for a change. City life is so different and I think everyone should experience it, even for a brief time. After HS I moved to Boston and its been four years. Its so much different from home, but I love it just as much, if not more. Give Baltimore a try! What do you have to lose?

now is the time to move to downtown baltimore. it is sooo different than it was 10 yrs ago. when i went to church in the city as a kid, my mom told me to hurry up and lock the doors and roll up the windows. today its all young professionals (for the most part) and cute little pubs. but i guess if you are looking at cost wise, frederick is a bit more cheap.

well, like i said im pretty familiar with Bmore i used to go out a lot there and go down. I went to school in York which is a straight shot, and I agree its much better than in the past, but for one its a little expensive for what I think the salary of the job would be, plus I think the commute from Bmore to Frederick would be a little long for my liking, but I have given it a thought.

I agree. I went from very rural to very urban, and it was a really good thing to do. I actually think everyone should do something to get out of their comfort zone altogether, at least once, and that could mean experiencing city life if you've only done rural, or experiencing rural life if you've only known urban...but I'm sure there are few who will agree with me. But I think getting out of the zone you've always known is beneficial to everyone, not just people who've never done city living.

That would be an insane commute because the end of 70 backs up like crazy when you get near 695. I drove from Cockeysville north of Baltimore to Gaithersburg, south of Frederick, for a while and some days it was a 2 hour commute each way because of traffic. Did I mention I moved out of state? If you get a job in B-more you should consider living northwards near Cockeysville because it's a straight shot down and it's still inexpensive compared to a lot of Maryland areas (read: at last I checked you could still rent an apartment for less than $1000 a month). What field are you in? Cockeysville and Hunt Valley have a lot of industrial kind of jobs too, (not sure what Cintas Corp. does but it sounds industrial). Just my thoughts.

well if you get a job downtown, why live so far as frederick? try catonsville, elkridge or ellicott city. those places arent too expensive. i live by the airport so i am pretty much 20 min from all the major areas (downtown balto., canton, fells pt, columbia, annapolis, white marsh).

(Not to disagree too much Kimmer :0 ....
I just threw Cockeysville in there because IMHO Catonsville is kinda scary crime-wise (my grandpa lives there) and Elkridge, while so-so on the safety scale, has gotten pretty expensive and there are few rental places there (other grandparents live there). Ellicott City is very nice but it is high on the expense scale, much like Columbia has become. Good luck with your job search and make sure you check out the area thoroughly before you decide to move.

well every city or town has its highs and lows. we dont know what his budget or anything like that is.... and elkridge isnt anything compared to crofton or severna park--price wise that is.

did you want to live downtown or did you want to move somewhere more rural?

its a management trainee position with Cintas, they do like shop towels, and uniforms, B2b type stuff. my guess is the salary would prob. be mid 30's or so...the thing is its fine to live in Bmore or aroudn there, but its another to work in Frederick and have to make that commute..lol....Where im from here in NY like i said is about 65,000 people and i from more of the inner city, so im a city-type of guy, but im good at adjusting and can pretty much get along with any type of surrounding. with that said i dont want to live around a bunch of rednecks, nor right in the ghetto either....lol....i guess i might be being too picky, but i need a job, but dont want to sacrifice me being miserable for a least a year....I have to find some sort of happy medium...I'm so confused...lol

You could try living in say Germantown or Gaithersburg because it's not as bumblefuck as Fredneck is and there are *some* apartments for under $1000 (Germantown mostly). Check out the area real well before you commit to anything. Those areas would only be around 30-35 minute drive and the traffic would be going the other way south on 270 not north.

A little update in case anyone in here cared....I dont have to worry about moving to Frederick it looks like. After finally reaching someone after a week, I was pretty much blown off and given the run around by the person I spoke to on the phone, so not only will not have a job, I wasnt even given a formal interview. He didnt seemed thrilled at my prospect of relocating, I guess he was thinking he didnt want to have to come out of his pocket or have a real discussion on relocationg.......Why the hell then would they call me to talk about the position, obviously they seen that I was from NY on my resume, I mean these people DO read resumes....right?.....I'm starting to get very frsutrated at this job search thing...
