Haven't written one of these in a while:

I propose that we contract out the entire Iraq operation to private companies. Remove all military forces and replace them with private contractors. Turn the war into a line item in the budget as opposed to a debate about American forces. Then there would be no moral dilemma about the use of military forces.

Well, isn't that pretty much how it already is? Government is basically run by huge companies. In my mind the government is just some sort of puppet for big business and their agenda anyway.

What will the generals do then?

However, I do think more of the military support roles need to be contracted out. I've seen entire areas under contract perform so much better/cheaper than before. The waste in gov't is disgusting. After working in a few gov't organizations, I think military is the worst.

We tried that when we paid the warlords in Afghanistan to get Osama at Tora Bora...since they can easily take more money(which is the only compelling interest, vs. the military who at least nominally fights for god and country and liberty), it simply would not be effective. Iraq is fine. We're doing good work. Our boys should make us proud...the only way we lose is if the American people stop supporting them.

Well, you've almost got the whole picture... Just add that it's also a sort of puppet for the egos of lazy political appointees, and you've nailed the description of that big waste of time and money that is our govt to a tee.

I just love how the story broke this weekend that US officials met with some of the Insurgent Leaders in Iraq. So now we DO negotiate with terrorists? What the hell was that? Did I miss something?

Remove all military forces and replace them with private contractors.

Isn't this probably already the case with mercenaries/soldiers for hire? Not the replacement, but the supplementing, that is. Quite the lucrative endeavor.
