View Full Version : Asian Guys on The Real World

I was reading an article in The Nation today about how marriage is portrayed /corrupted by reality tv, and there are never any interracial couples on shows like The Bachelor/ette and Joe Millionaire and Average Joe (ha ha, two Joes). And I thought to myself, have there been any Asian guys on The Real World? Have there even been any Asian guys on any reality shows?

As I was writing this post, I just thought of Jai on Queer Eye. And Bobby Trendy on The Anna Nicole Show. And those two guys who got kicked off or left O-Town on Making the Band: Ikaika and Bryan (or was it Paul?).

So...I'm invalidating my own thread as I write it. Yeah. If you all know of any others, please contribute.

I don't think The Real World has featured any Asian men. But I do know that Road Rules has had 2 Asian males (Yes- Semester at Sea and one of the guys on the later editions). Also wasn't there an Asian male on the first season of Big Brother??

When I think asian dudes in reality tv, I think of William Hung on American Idol.

Oh Yes at Semester at Sea, fine! But your right, I honestly can't think of many Asian men on TV period.

But I'm always concerned with the Black women they cast in these reality programs. They always appear to be bitchy, loud, rude, and obnoxious, ie. Omarosa, Coral, Heather B, Tami etc. They are never sweet, demure, quiet or come from a good home or progressive background.

Sorry, didn't mean to get off topic.

You know, if you think about it, all the Star Treks have been pretty racially diverse. They're even very diverse in regards to species  Sorry that was bad, but in truth they really have done a good job of representing different races in very positive ways.

There were two, Yes and Steve. Both are half Thai and half white. I don't think there has been any guy on the show (Real World or Road Rules) of a full Asian ethnicity.

i'm always looking at the hispanic women they cast on the Real World/Road Rules and i'm usually disappointed. With the exception of Rachel (SF), they tend to act the stereotype of feisty, highly sexual latinas- as seen in Jisela, Melissa (miami) and that Johanna girl on the new season. Hispanic women come from all spectrums, i'd wish they would show that.
Sorry to get off topic

A cast of cool tempered, mature and under-sexed adults doesn't make for good reality TV :)

And I'm using the terms "good" and "reality" very loosely.

Has anyone else noticed the Real World Formula

1) Gay Guy
2) Loud Girl
3) Innocent Girl
4) Frat/Jock Guy
5) Ethnic Girl
6) Nice Guy
7) Illness/Needy Crying Girl, which can sometimes be substituted with another Gay Guy

-all of these people must be extremely horny, and non-descriminating when it comes to who they'd sleep with. Now this isn't a hard and fast formula, but they generally follow this trend. Oh, and everyone must be thin and be able to apply make-up before they get out of bed.

Was that an insult or compliment to asian men?

Neither. People are pointing out absence of minorities or inaccurate representation in "reality" tv. Not all white men are frat boys who get drunk, start random fights and want to hook up with anything hot and available. Not all white women prance around in their underwear and make out with other women. There are no "cool tempered, mature and under-sexed adults" of any color/race/ethnicity in the Real World Austin (maybe the hairdresser chick, but I have a feeling she's got something up her sleeve), there's probably one chosen to be the peace maker/mediator.

It's "reality" television, it's intentionally sensationalist. There's not pretention of being a National Geographic type representation of different races/cultures. Melinda isn't concerned with "keeping it real" for all the white folk out there.

hhhmmm, are you saying that this "reality" show might not really represent the "real world"

as i am in canada i don't have access to mtv, but i did have have canada for a while and it was awful - from what i saw they never actually played any vid's it was just nick and jess and a bunch of other crap......

I've pitched to MTV the idea of doing the Real World with 7 people that I know. That would be highly entertaining. They're not biting though.

rayj - i don't know your frineds, but it is tiring watching people who are constantly out there. just for once it would be nice to see people who can sit down and talk about their issues rather than have it digress into some type of jerry springerish brwal or a bunch of backstabbing and name calling....

I think it'd be awesome if they ever did "Real World: QLC" and have like a diverse group of us on there. You have to admit it'd be worth watching. ?Will they get jobs? Will they kill each other?

RayJ1977
06-29-2005, 05:05 PM
No, spokes. I want to cast 7 people I know to wath THEM do all the ridiculous antics. The hot girl from work, my best friend, my skank ex, my office courrier, this guy at the golf course who throws things, a midget, and my dad. And give them a stupid job....they will have to be garbage men.

I would LOVE to see a real world QLC. Maybe Abby can have a contest...the 7 people with the highest post counts...

I always figured that Asians don't get much airtime because there just aren't that many of us (unless you're in Asia). So just out of curiousity, how many people here are Asian? I know there's temptation, Angyl, mishl, goldenlinestate.....there also used to be a guy called bigboom around here (the simple fact that I actually remember that indicates that I've been spending WAY too much time here. now that I think about it, there used to be paperjam and Phoenix, a couple of big posters who have since moved on, remember them? some of the more 'senior' posters will know who I'm talking about)

well if two hot asian chicks fight, with like jello or pudding or whatever men like, maybe that will DRAW the asian men to the Real World in order to get with us.

I guess out of those categories, I'd be the first born son, but what the hell does that mean? That's more of a factual statistic than an indicator of my personality.

(notice how I'm delicately trying to steer the direction of this thread AWAY from the asian chicks jelly wrestling. I must be really mature, really stupid, or gay...)

When I lived in intentional community with five random people, we used to joke that we were like a "real" "Real World."

Except without all the sluttiness and the fact that we were all in social justice jobs. So, perhaps, in fact, more "real."

Jelly is like...what you put with peanut butter, yo.

We call that jam. Here in Australia, we also have some particularly nasty stuff called vegemite.

And another thing, we don't say 'cell phone', we say 'mobile'. It's like that scene in Pulp Fiction where they're talking about the cheese royale.

wordsmith
06-30-2005, 07:06 PM
Hee, stoney. In the U.S. jam and jellly are different. jam has fruit puree in it, jelly doesn't.

stonemonkey
06-30-2005, 08:31 PM
jam and jellly are different.

haha, we spell jelly with only 2 L's. (ok, I'm nitpicking, it's just that your spelling and grammar is normally perfect, words)

It did always puzzle me as a kid, how that magician dude on sesame street used to say 'a la peanut butter and jelly sandwiches', because to me, jelly is the equivalent of your jello. When I realised it was peanut butter and jam, it all made sense. I could finally sleep at night.

I'd watch!

For some reason, it reminds me of "Amish in the City," or The Mad Real World on Chappelle's Show.
