inspired by our talk on the other thread...
for any of you (especially the girls) who have tatoos, how did you go about choosing your design? how long did you think it over? where is your tattoo? do you regret it? any suggestions on where to look at designs?

My favorite thread! I'll recap from the other thread...
I've wanted something Celtic since I was a student in Ireland at 19 (also one half of my heritage). I finally figured out a design I wanted, and then sat on it for about six years, until I was convinced it was something I really wanted, not a phase or something I'd regret or not be that jazzed about. I figured if I still wanted it six years later, I probably always would. I don't regret it at all. I love it.
It's a shamrock with a celtic knot entwined inside the outline of the shamrock. It's about the size of a silver dollar and sits between my shoulderblades.

jess - is it right in the middle? i can't tell from that pic. it's really cute.
i've just started thinking about this, and i know i'd like to get something that has to do with feminine empowerment. now i just have to start looking around and see what's out there. i also decided i want to have a considerable amount of green in it. i think it looks nice on paler skin (like ours!)

Yup, right in the middle. The pic's taken over my shoulder, so everything's a little off-kilter. Yup, mine has three shades of green, though you can't really tell from that pic. Green is my favorite color.

I have a sunburst on my back. I plan to tell my anesthesiologist to "aim for the sun" when I'm being administered my epidural. ;) I actually thought over what I wanted for a long time before getting it, looked at a lot of designs both online and in tattoo mags, then drew up my own based on what I liked. As an added benefit of having it on my back, I rarely see it so it's virtually impossible for me to get tired of looking at it. I've had it for probably 7 years or so. Still glad I did it. :)

Right on. I'd sort of like to get another, but I don't know what or where it would be so I'm resisting. I'll know when I'm ready for my next one. Steve will probably get another before I will. Which is fine with me. The one he's got makes me want to rip all his clothes off and do nasty things to him.

My first tattoo, when I was 18, is a phoenix on my back. it's all in black, and actually people often think it's an eagle, but not it's a pheonix. I decided on the design when I was.....17 and sat on it for a year. Its on my back on the left side, kind of between the middle of my back and my lower back. I didint want it to show all the time. I got it because my first name (which is NOT kim) means pheonix in vietnamese. I love it dearly.
The second tattoo is something like this design:
http://www.bead-art.com/GoddessChoker.jpg
except my goddess is sitting cross-legged. It was a necklace I wore everyday since I was about 16 to when I got it, which was right before I turned 21 i think. It's blue, outlined in black. That on is on the top of my right foot, which i don't think anyone should do unless they have a HIGh tolerance for pain. Coincidentally, right after i got the tattoo done, I lsot hte necklace. For me it's sort of like having a cross, since it's a symbol of my religion.
Like i said earlier, I love both of mine and they mean a LOT to me. I'd never regret them and I never will. If you're going to have something burned into your skin, it might as well hold some sort of message to you.
If i were to get a third one, it's be "breathe." jsut like that in typewriter fond across the shoulder blades, but not too big. All mine were done by the same guy, and i think if i got my third, I'd probably drive all the way back to Iowa to get it done.

Two friends of mine got really nice tats on their lower backs while we were studying abroad for a semester. One friend's tat is an African tribal symbol (supposedly) that means "learn from the past." It's a really cool inverted heart type thing, and it looks great on her. I'll try to find a pic and post it here, to give you a better idea of its appearance. (This is completely off topic, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE full sleeve tats on guys...those who have moderately muscled forearms and can carry the look...like Mike Ness of Social Distortion...woo hoo!)

I was just talking about this to someone last weekend...
I know what I want. :)
I know where I want it. :)
I am terrified of needles. :torn:
During my geneology research, I found our Welsh clan's motto: Fidus et Audux. It means 'faith and courage'. What I'd like to do is center a small trefoil knot at the base of my spine, and place the motto around it - Fidus on the left, et underneath, and Audux on the right. The text would be black, and if the trefoil knot was any color other than black, it'd be blue. (duh.)
The geneology is solid; it's not changing and I'm not going to get tired of it. It's in a place where it can't be seen (unless I want you to  ) so there's no risk professionally. I know, I know - damn the man, etc.
I'm just terrified of needles. Terr-ified. Times like nine hundred million. It isn't the pain - it's the thought of something piercing my skin. Repeatedly. (I don't handle doctors' office visits very well, obviously...)
wordsmith
08-03-2005, 06:23 PM
Know what? I'm absolutely needle-phobic. Weird, huh? But my phobia is more to do with things being injected or taken from my veins. Piercing a little ways into the skin didn't bother me. Plus, it's on my back, I couldn't see it happening.
And it didn't hurt.

Jess, that's really pretty.
For myself, I don't think I could find anything that I'd really like for the rest of my life. My heritage is such a mish-mosh and I don't really identify with any of my Irish, English, Russian or Polish roots. And I'm afraid any pic I'd get sick of too after a while. I'd love it if I could get one done and have it for a few years and then when I was sick of it I could change it or make it disappear (easily, not the whole laser thing).

Oh. Mygod. So, I've been through Maiden, I'll be experiencing Mother soon, so all I have to look forward to is CRONE?!
DUDE. That SUCKS!
Steve has a dragon clutching a yin-yang on his upper right arm. He wants one on the left - he's got to balance his chi, after all. ;) I absolutely love his tat and can't wait for him to get another. His younger sister has 10 tats. TEN. That's a little much for me.
really?! maybe if I can't see the needle, I'd be okay...hmm...
It's actually a cluster of needles, not just one. And it looks sort of like an ink pen, for lack of a better comparison. So it's not like some dude is coming at you with a hypodermic needle full of ink. It's more like they're drawing on you with a really sharp pen.
wordsmith
08-03-2005, 06:36 PM
Well, it doesn't feel like a hypodermic needle...it doesn't feel like an injection. It feels more like (to me, anyway), like you're being etched on. Like a constant scratching away. It's not comfortable, exactly, but it wasn't really "painful," either. Just a sensation you're def. aware of.
P.S. I speak only for where I got mine done. I understand that other locations (bonier ones) can hurt like a son of a bitch.

i've just started thinking about this, and i know i'd like to get something that has to do with feminine empowerment. )
kita - i like that idea a lot, especially the symbolism of the triple moon. i think that would look great between the shoulder blades. my next tattoo will be along those lines, or some kind of exotic flower. i am thinking back of neck, shoulder, between shoulder blades, wrist.
i have the tibetan buddhist eternity knot on my . . . surprise, lower back (before it became all the rage). i wanted it on my inner wrist, but i was told the veins are too close to the surface there. i thought a bit about what i wanted. i knew that i wanted a tattoo long before i knew what i wanted. i studied in nepal during college & this represents a lot of my experience there & that period of my life, on top of its own symbolism of eternity & rebirth. this is what it looks like, but not so flashy. i got it in black ink http://www.markdefrates.com/pages/tibknot.html
mid20 - what does steve have? i am very curious now.

i have lots of anxiety about needles & shots, but somehow i have managed getting a tattoo, my nose pierced & 5 holes in my ears, of which, i pierced 3 by myself. i am not gonna lie, my tattoo did hurt. along the spine is supposed to be one of the worst spots. my tattoo took about a half hour. the outlining hurt most, kinda like burning. the shading actually felt good, by comparison - a really weird feeling. when it is something that you want bad enough, you will endure the pain. i survived & i want another.

I understand that other locations (bonier ones) can hurt like a son of a bitch.I sat there and watched my buddy, a Captain in the US Army and Iraq War veteran, hold back tears as his knuckles turned white while he got his ankle tatoo. I had been hoping to get one myself that day, but not after watching that!

I don't have a tatoo, but I've been wanting one for a long time. What I want is the greeting/blessing "namaste" written in tastefully small Sanskrit on the lower back of my kneck. At that location people shouldn't be able to see it when I am wearing a collared shirt. If all goes well and I decide I want another tatoo then I will probably go for something to celebrate my roots, like Jess did. Maybe a Celtic knot arm band...

I have a multi-shaded butterfly on my lower right back (also before it was all the rage) I waited about a year before I got it. I originally wanted a fairy but the design I wanted was too complex for the size. It would have been huge. So I found this butterfly design that was really cute and got that instead. I don't know that I want another or what it might be if I did get another one. It didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. It felt like getting attacked by a vicious kitten in one spot for half an hour. I also thought the outlining hurt much more than the coloring. I should find a pic...

kita, goddess signs are really strong. I know this is really fruity sounding, but my goddess...well ever since I've gotten it on me I've become a stronger person? I'm pretty spiritual when it comes to that stuff. I like the triple moon. It's also gone past wicca and such. Goddess symbols are often used in all of paganism, as well as the goddess movement in general.

I am deathly afraid of needles when it comes to getting a shot, but as it turns out I was just fine when I got a tattoo. The one on my leg hurt, the one on my shoulder I didn't even feel (it was my second) and the one on my lower back is the most recent (feb this year) and although there were a couple spots that I cringed most of the time I had to fight off a laugh because it tickled.
I am going to get one more. probably on the inside of my ankle. my daughter's name and maybe her birthday as well

I've thought about a tattoo, and even had mine picked out but I sorta lost interest, and also was just too afraid to go and get it done (even though I have no problems donating blood on a regular basis AND have lived through bikini waxings)
What I wanted was a silhouette of a wolf howling at the moon, wiht the moon in the background, and the wolf would be all black or dark blue and moon a pale yellow.
Sort of like this picture:

Thanks!! I just picked the pics off the wall. Alot of ppl don't like to do that, but if I am looking around and one calls my name thats what I go for.
Oh and to answer one of kittys original questions I have wanted a tattoo since I was about 5 years old. I met my cousin Jimmy then and he had them all over his arms and I thought it was the most awesome thing I had ever seen. I've wanted them ever since. My mom could never talk me out of it, no matter how old I was. When I hit 18 I went in to get a lizard on my ankle and came back with the one that is on my leg. I went back to have the color redone because I didn't like how it looked and another guy was getting the same tat on his chest. So I know at least one person in the world has the same tatoo.
The one on my shoulder came in becaue my bestfriend wanted a tat, but was scared to death. She wanted us to get matching tattoos but she wanted a little one. So we got matching butterflies. The big butterfly came from a trip my sister and I took to dallas. we both got tattoos to commemorate our trip. she got a shamrock. (maybe its a clover. I can't remember the difference)
wordsmith
08-04-2005, 10:39 AM
They're just different plants, Tina. A shamrock has three leaves. The reason it's associated with Ireland is because early Christian lore holds that St. Patrick used it to teach the pagans about the Trinity. But threes are also sacred in pagan beliefs, just as they are in Christianity. If you notice, patterns of three come up in lots of Celtic knotwork and spirals and stuff.

I've thought about getting one for years now, but always always chicken out. I definitely love the idea of getting something like Celtic knot, but I don't know. That and it'd be still like an act of rebellion considering my father HATES them with a blinding passion :huge:. One friend has even offered to pay for it since she's that sure i'll never do it. lol. My dad wasn't thrilled with any of it, but my brother had gotten one three years earlier and my sister had gotten one the year before, so he was kind of desensitized to it. All of ours happen to Celtic, and really pretty. My brother has a triple knot the same place mine is, but it's bigger, and my sister has a blue triskellion spiral at her hip.

LOL. Well, I admit I'm pretty ignorant of Wiccan lore and belief structure, so I'll take your word for it. In my mind all I could picture was a hunchbacked, warty, withered old bag leaning on a gnarly cane - maybe with a crow on her shoulder or something. ;)
mid20 - what does steve have? i am very curious now. Steve's got a dragon clutching a yin-yang on his upper right arm. The detail on it is amazing. We've always gone to Adam Goldstein at AAA Tattoos over in Rogers, Arkansas (yeah, Oklahoma is still lame and the only state in the nation that still bans tats). Anyway, Adam is extremely talented and did an awesome job on Steve's tat, and has done all 10 of my sister-in-law's. He also did some touch-up work on mine. Oh, plus two for my mother-in-law. Plus no telling how many for random friends of ours. We get an under-the-table discount when any of us go in because we've done so much business with him. Steve chose the dragon and yin-yang to honor his years practicing martial arts. It's cool, too, because the dragon's talons are piercing the yin-yang symbol and we asked Adam to make the dragon have blue eyes, like Steve. :) A tiny personalization like that can really mean a lot.

Oklahoma bans tattoos? Why?!
Because we have too many Bible-thumping right wingers who think it's their place to tell the rest of us what to do with our bodies.
We suck.
Lately tat shops have been opening and doing business, though, having found a loophole in OK law. They maintain that tatoos aren't really "permanent" anymore since you can have them lasered off, so that circumvents the specific law that bans tattooing in OK. Our gov't is still chewing that one over trying to figure out what to do.
Rumor is, several years back our governor's daughter came home with a tat and royally pissed him off, so in retaliation he pushed a law through the state gov't banning tattooing. I don't know if that's true or not. But we suck so it could be.

Our local tattoo parlor was recently raided and shut down and its owner and employees jailed due to the massive heroin trafficking operation for which it was a cover (No, I did NOT get my tattoo there, I got it out of state). Bullshit like that adds to the bad rap legitimate artists have to deal with.

i have two, the first i got when i was 19. it's a painting of an arch angel. it took about 3hrs, and is done in black w/shading, and some shades of violet for highlights. it's about 7 inches high and 3 inches wide, right between my shoulder blades. the pain was VERY tolerable. i nearly fell asleep at one point.
i have another tattoo of my boyfriend's name on my hip. THAT one hurt, but it only took about 20mins.

Thanks and thanks! One of my main hobbies is finding an appropriate BL quote in all real-life situations :)

One of my main hobbies is finding an appropriate BL quote in all real-life situations :)Spending a lot of time at crowded bars and parties, I personally use, "Hey, man! There's a beverage here," a lot. I've also started referring to coitus as "fixing the cable."

Hehehe. I am fond of, "obviously, you are not a golfer", while my SO likes "she's my fucking lady friend!"

Wow. Well, that's asinine. At least the states around you are a little more progressive.

Is it a Celtic cross, with the circle around the crossbars?
I was forced to talk to M today because of A's school stuff and I asked him. I was wrong. It is a celtic cross. It has the circle. I guess my memory is faltering after 2 years. I guess I am trying to block him from my memory as much as possible. LOL!!!

What do you mean? It's not a dry state.

No, it's not, but all beer has to be below some tiny alcohol percentage. Basically everything in the state is what the rest of us like to call "Near Beer." This is done in mountainous states for a good reason... You don't need as much alcohol due to the altitude. Why it's done in Oklahoma is beyond me. The Arbuckles are not what I would refer to as a high elevation environment.
