I'm reading my local paper online (Newsday), and I came across an interesting article that talks about generations in the workplace (something I have a fond interest in)... http://www.newsday.com/business/ny-bzcov144381960aug14,0,3386990.story?coll=ny-business-headlines
Something that caught my attention about Gen "Y". One of the people they're interviewing talks about how managers should not be surprised if they get a phone call from a parent regarding performance reviews or advancement requests. I just want to know how you'd feel if one of your parents calls up your boss if you got an unfavorable review or something similar? Would that creep you out, or would you be fine and dandy with it? I think that it's taking it a bit too far in the hyperparenting, but these days, I wouldn't be surprised if it's common.

You know, the handful of parents that have no concept on reality really give our entire generation a bad rap.

My parents would never do that, and if they did, I'd freak out on them.

I have never heard of that to be honest... my own parents have very little idea what my job actually entails, had never heard of my industry till I joined it, and despite the fact that I work for this mega-sized multinational, had never heard of my company either.
You know, Kelly, I think this is an urban legend. Possibly once somewhere, there was some brat who had their parents say something to a boss, or about a boss or whatever and it got blown out of proportion to say that it's a common occurance.

What's a legend, my parents not having a clue about "management consulting" (my dad asks me about Price Coopers, KPGM, and Booz and Allen on a regular basis) or someone else's parent's calling their grown child's boss?
LOL--the parents calling the boss, silly!!!!

Exactly, I'm not surprised your parents know nothing about your field. No one in my family knew anything about mine and had never heard of my company before I went to work there. Actually, they never heard of my FORMER company either.

Seriously...my parents had NO idea what I did at the library really...now with my new job they have a better idea but I don't think they know it entirely.

I don't know I can see that happening. Mainly because I worked at a place that employed college kids for the summer and their parents would call to ask questions. We wouldn't talk to them though and pissed some of them off. Hi, we hired your kid, not you!! It was unreal to me that parents would call to ask about the status of an application, check their kid's work schedule or just call to complain about some policy. Um, if your kid has an issue they can talk to the supervisor themselves. Talk abuot not learning responsibility. :googly:
