Okay, for those of you who have been following the (seemingly) never-ending saga of my trying to get a lease on the three-bedroom apartment I've been sharing, here's episode 346, entitled "The Four Days' Wonder":
In June, I put up an ad on Craigslist looking for two roommates for when my then-current roomies moved out at the end of August, when their lease was due to expire. The first person I made an offer to was this girl named Serena. Once I found the other roommate, a guy named Brian, we all applied for the lease together.
Well, the management people didn't think Serena had enough income, so I spent a lot of August back-and-forth with them on the phone trying to find a way she could be approved. At the same time, I turned down someone who wanted what would have been Serena's room who could not only have paid but provided a guarantor. Finally last Friday, the day after Serena moved into the apartment, the management people agreed to lease us the apartment if Serena paid her entire year's share of the rent up front. I was overjoyed.
For about three days, that is, because today, Serena took all of her stuff out of the apartment and bolted. Mercifully, we've already paid for September, and given that she told my other roommate as she was leaving that she expected to use our apartment to put up her mother when she comes to town later this month (something Brian and I will not allow to happen under any circumstances), we have no reason to believe she'll put a stop to her rent check.
She did all this after giving me a long song and dance about how she wanted a place for the whole year, didn't want to have to move around a lot as she had in previous years of grad school, etc.
There are no words to describe how pissed I am at all of this. I went through hell trying to get this girl approved, and she turns around and treats us like this. We are not running a fucking hotel! If your mohter needs a place to stay, call the damned Marriott! I am not putting up your guests on my futon after you've left us in the lurch!
The only good side of this is that I can offer the room to a friend who has expressed an interest in living here. She has enough income that the complex will almost certainly approve her, and she'll be able to move in in October, so some good will come of this. But I am mad, mad pissed!
