I'm in Hong Kong. I don't know anything about a QLC group out here, either. I think it would totally help the people who came out here during the boom in their early 20s who may have been layed off since then.

I'm not living in Asia now- but I just got back from a three month trip to Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. If anyone wants to talk about it (because I love talking about the cultural differences) let me know.

I'm going to be back in Kuala Lumpur soon (finishing up college + work in the US). I seem to be facing the Third Culture Brat / Quarterlife Crisis syndrome. Sort of a perfect storm, if you will.

I've been away for 7 years now. I expect that going "home" will be just like moving to a new city. And I'm fully aware of the culture shock after graduating from a liberal arts college -- how to find people who enjoy shared moments of introspection, jobs that feed the body and the soul, and explanations for the relatives as to why I majored in anthropology despite the fact that "cannot make money lah"... none of which come naturally in Malaysian culture (or, I suspect, in pan-Asian culture).

If there's one thing that I'm happy to dive back into, it's the KLite's legendary love of food. There's simply no better way to bring Malaysians together. So here's my ideal support group: KLites who have returned (by choice, and with conviction and perspective) from years abroad, who find themselves a little bit lost in this new-old city but are exhilarated by the chance to explore, who get together for cook-offs or potlucks, and who enjoy a verbal digestif of idle observations and dangerous ideas.

Good conversation and good food -- I know what makes me happy! Any takers?

I lived in Singapore for 8 years and my parents have lived in Korea on and off for the past 6 years. My family moved away from the US when I was a year old, so I grew up as a non-military Third Culture kid.

I remember telling someone in college that my parents lived in Seoul and he cocked his head to the side and looked at me awkwardly. When I asked if he was okay, he confusingly said that he didn't realize I was Asian. Um. I'm not. I have brown hair, green eyes, and fair skin.

I think the best, though, was when I moved to Chicago during high school and told a girl on the bus that I had lived in Singapore. She said, and I quote, "Oh, cool. Isn't that, like, in Southern Florida?" :googly:
