What's causing pain in my tailbone area? It's a throbbing, pressur-y ache, I get it both when sitting and when lying down. What's up with that? No, I didn't fall and bruise it.

Do you sit on hard surfaces a lot or for long periods of time?

I sit for long periods of time certain days of the week for work. But no more than I have for the past four years.

Did you get a new desk chair? Maybe you're sitting differently?

I did get a new chair, but that was back in January or February. But that could be it.

Sitting for long periods of time definately causes pain in the tail bone area. Your best bet is to take a little walk even if just around the office every half hour or so.
Also another good stretching excercise is to stretch your shoulders backwards. get your arms at a 90 degree angle to your body and then stretch them back and forth.

It might be a pilinital cyst. I had the same pain and hadnt been on any hard sitting surfaces or fallen and bruised my tailbone.
Way to tell (graphic) is to put your hand at the top of your butt crack and press in, if it feels like there is a ball (almost like a zit) then you have a cyst. Go to the doctor and have them drain it before it absceses.
I let mine go and it abscesed.....and was REALLY painful.
They have surgery to get rid of them but its not that pleasant.
If you want more information go to webmd and type in pilinital cyst.
Or PM me and I can do my best to help.

Yeah, if you're sitting up straighter or hunching more in this new chair, it could be putting different pressure on your back muscles... possibly more pressure on muscles that were/are weaker. Take note... are you tucking your tailbone when you sit? Are you arching your back more?
Also, maybe this new chair is higher, so it's adjusting the way you have to sit to view your monitor properly? Maybe it's a matter of raising or lowering your monitor on your desk??

It's gotten most noticeable, actually, since getting a new computer, which does sit differently (it's one of the newer flat screen monitor iMacs on the heavy aluminum pedestal stand). What's interesting is that between the chair and the new monitor, I actually sit with better posture (i.e. straighter, not hunched). Figures that it makes me hurt when I actually improve how I sit.
