Last I heard, average age at marriage in the U.S. for women was 27 and 29 for men.

What are the statistics for single people who want to stay single?

you know I live in the northeast which is supposed to have the highest marriage age but it seems like everyone I know was married by 23

I think it's funny that in my rather backward region, lots of people around my age (25) have a kid or two, but many of them are not married. Some WERE married, but are already divorced.

Totally the case here. Lots of single moms and dads in their mid- to late-twenties on the dating scene. What up, "starter" marriages? Gee, and it seemed like such a good idea to get married straight outta high school.

What is even worse than these statistics is that marriage amoung blacks has declined quite a bit since the 70s. I've read that 65% of all African-Americans are unmarried and the average for black women that will never marry rose from 20% to 42%.

I wonder what the stats are for unmarried, educated, left-leaning, fairly independent women living in conservative rural midwestern small towns.

Probably about the same as one for a woman living in Upstate NY. ;)

25.1 for women? That's still young! I guess I'm "behind" if I go by that number. My sister-in-law turned 25 in June and married my brother last month.

It's not only the small towns that you see a bunch of young 20-somethings with kids, married or not. It's in the city, too. I know of way too many people I graduated with from high school (and people I'm related to) who have kids, got married, divorced, or never married. I know a handful of people who had the "starter" marriages, too, one of them being my ex.

Triple snort. I'll be 30 in December.

Well, I'm sure your future wife won't ask you right off the bat what you do for a living. :p

It made me feel half decent that I'm only 24, to be 25 in a few months, and I'm not hitched yet. Pretty much all my good friends are engaged or married... I'm not all that weird after all :D

You: Messenger.
Me: Hmm, should I use a sawed-off shotgun or an old-fashioned crossbow?

Actually, I'm pretty depressingly certain I've got a good grip on what those numbers might be hovering around, to be truthful.

Yeah, it did seem like a good idea at the time. It's not really a shocker though, 18 year olds don't always make good decisions. And it isn't like people like being in their 20's and having to tell people they are divorced. :(
