Hey all you Northeasterner's. I am looking for a good place in NE to take a weekend trip, maybe see some foliage, maybe some shopping, museums? Something not too far from NYC, so probably CT or VT. Any recommendations?

Newport, RI isn't too far. Check out the mansions.

I hear Mohonk Mountain in NY is pretty nice too.

Well, the leaves in CT and RI really haven't changed yet. Of course, I'm not sure when you're planning on going, but if you plan on having your visit on one of the next few weekends, I'd say go to VT. NH seems to be about ready to build an ark. There are a ton of Bed & Breakfasts, but they can book up really quickly. All you darn "leafers" :p . www.vermontvacation.com is an awesome website.

P.S.
You can also go to the Ben & Jerry's plant in VT :D

It's going to be a long hike, but you just can't beat the kangamangus highway in the NH White Mountains for foliage.

I'll second Ben & Jerry's in VT :).

CT leaf peeping maybe good in a week or two... the norhtwest corner, Litchfield county specifically, of the state has some nice drives and lots of little antique shops.

Coll, I expected you to type Foxwoods... I'm disappointed, quite frankly. ;)

I like Salem, Mass. at this time of year. Weather's nice, good foliage, Boston's close and it's hoppin' b/c Halloween isn't that far away.

Hey Met, I just read your title. Did you know Ben and Jerry's has Oatmeal Raisin cookie dough ice cream?

You could try the lake george/adirondacks area. I think they're at peak leaf seaon right now.

I've never been to Mohegan Sun, but I was at Foxwoods recently and I have to say there were some beautiful girls down there. There was this one girl playing blackjack. Absolutely smokin.

Yes, I did. But, my title in no way references ACTUAL cookie dough. For the record.

I prefer Mohegan Sun to Foxwoods any day :). They have an awesome buffet as well. Mmmmm, now I'm hungry and want to gamble.

I went to undergrad at New Paltz and this is an awesome area in the fall. They have some nice stores and shopping areas that have been created as well. Do a search, there are a bunch of different websites on my favorite town up north ;). Plus the motels are pretty cheap if you want to stay overnight. Everything is in walking distance as well, unless, of course it rains. There is also a bus station right in the middle of town. I think the Trailways line goes there. Mohonk and Lake Minnewaska, two of my other favorite places are nearby, if you have a car :D.

Thanks guys, you're awesome.

We would leave after work on Friday, next weekend most likely. So if we were leaving on a night after work, I think NH and northern VT is just too far to be driving towards. Maybe Litchfield and the other CT locations are closer to NYC.

Ben & Jerry's I know all too well from going to college in VT.

Winney, I love the fact that you think of New Paltz as "up north" LOL.

Mystic Seaport and the casinos are within a half hour of each other, and the Litchfield area is maybe an hour or so from the casinos, traffic permitting. One of the few benefits of an itty bitty state- one end to the other in under two hours!!

Newport sucks over the winter, trust me. I lived there last winter, but the summer made it well worth it.

Sounds like every beach town. How is it in the fall?

Yeah I kind of figured...probably not the best site since it was for a particular resort. I should ask my friend where he stays.

The secret is staying in town at New Paltz at the Super 8 or Days Inn. It's like 15 minutes or so from New Paltz. I went rock climbing at Mohonk when I was a senior in college for my RA team building experience. It was soooooooooooo fun!

Hey New Paltz...that's my mom's alma mater!

There are plenty of stuff to do...like hiking or just seeing nature. When I took my drive to southern VT/northern MA last Sunday, there were plenty of parks and forests along the way...would be nice to get a group together and seen fall's splendor...although it was kinda dreary that day.

I guess Saratoga is techincally mid-atlantic....but Upstate is great in the Fall. Tons to do, nice people, and not a bad drive from NYC.
