Now I aint sayin you a gold digger you got needs
You dont want ya dude to smoke but he can't buy weed
You got out to eat and he cant pay yall cant leave
There's dishes in the back, he gotta roll up his sleeves
But why yall washin watch him
He gone make it into a Benz out of that Datson
He got that ambition baby look in his eyes
This week he moppin floorz next week it's the fries
So, stick by his side
I know his dude's ballin but yea thats nice
And they gone keep callin and tryin
But you stay right girl
But when you get on he leave yo a** for a white girl

Get down girl go head get down
Get down girl go head get down
get down girl go head get down
get down girl go head
______

I was bored and that paragraph kept resonating in my brain

That's absurd. Benz's are overpriced re-branded Chrystler POS's. Datsuns, or Nissans, are a much better choice.

Thats wierd winney :D
umm I dont get this paragraph:

I know his dude's ballin but yea thats nice
And they gone keep callin and tryin
But you stay right girl
But when you get on he leave yo a** for a white girl
Get down girl go head get down
Get down girl go head get down
get down girl go head get down
get down girl go head

He is telling her to stay right so that her dude can leave her for a white girl but then he wants her to go down on her. Interesting. Kanye West make no sense eh.

I assumed that "Go head get down girl" meant "Go ahead & keep doing your Golddiggin' ways". Like he is telling her it's wrong, but he ain't gonna hold it against her.

He's not talking about "going down" like that!

Okay so I was way off! Maybe we should analyse more hip hop songs!

Okay I just remembered back in university they played a song at the pub nite that said something like "wham bam wham bam go down baby go down baby" and my friend would shake his hips front and back and then push his girlfriend's head down (when the song said go down baby). Sorry that scene just flashed in my mind.

As the wind sets the mood, its time to let off
A sucka tried to play me, the E, I'm not soft
I'm very hardcore, droppin bombs like Warsaw
It reminds me, back in 1984
When I went to a party with the master plan
To step up, and put the mic in my hand
Everybody was there from junior highs to high schools
Dyin' to get busy b/c I knew I had the tools
Then I got the heart and went by the set
I said "Yo, I wanna rock"; they said "Yeah, no sweat"
Kickin rhymes in the place, people couldnt take it
The style I flowed, the way I shake n baked it
Later on I made a record, and got recognition
Everybody's jockin, now nobody's dissin
Written and produced by the new rap duo
Yes EPMD, now I'm known in school
I see the backstabbers, and the ugly creature features
That used to diss me, when I was tryin to reach the
Tip tip top and I wont stop
To be the master, in the field of hiphop
I did that, and made a name for myself
The image of E, and all of my wealth
I see my fake friends, but things aint the same
Oh what a shame
I dissed em, who's to blame?
It wasnt me, it was the, it was the....FAME

So OK my problem with this song is that he's essentially saying a girl is a gold digger if she would prefer to date someone who has their shit together. How is that wrong? I mean given the choice between someone with a nice car and a good job and someone who's washing dishes and taking the bus.... which would you go for? Honestly. I expect someone I date to be on the same level of achievement as me. Therefore if I took the bus and washed dishes for a living... hey dude, I'd be all about it. But being a gold digger and having standards are two separate issues. Maybe I'm giving too much logical analysis to a rap song. I dunno. That's like saying you are a stupid bitch if you won't date a loser. I also don't get why a "ballin'" dude would leave the chick for a white girl. What on Earth does race have to do with it at all? Except to instigate racial tensions.

Probably. :D But seriously... rap is not about logical analysis and never has been. It's about rage, passion, and emotional psychology. The nonrational but equally strong part of human nature. Rap doesn't make logical sense, but neither do human beings.

Yeah but his message is BS. :p Yeah we should all date loser guys because maybe they have potential. Well maybe they do but not partaking doesn't make you a gold digger. You can have well directed rage and then nonsense. This is the latter.

But Capella I think in the first line he does say "She aint a gold digger but she getting with no broke n-word" I think that makes more sense. But I think most of rap these days is nursery rhymes with vulgar words.

Doesn't he say, "I ain't sayin' she a gold digga, but she ain't getting with no broke n****" That is in fact Mr. West's way of edumakating his young followers on the meaning of "irony." I took it to mean that he was intending the opposite of what he was saying. I could have heard it wrong though. I don't pay attention that well to poorly crafted baloney.

But just because you don't identify with the underlying feelings expressed-- or are personally at odds with them-- doesn't mean the feelings themselves aren't legitimate. I mean, if I wanted to, I could tear into TLC lyrics of "No Scrubs" (which also happens to be a crappy little song, but whatever). I could say, "What, so a guy's a loser if he doesn't yet have his own place and car? Fuck you, bitches!" Just sayin'.

For the record, this song isnt about what capella is saying AT ALL. I mean, the only similarity is the topic itself.

I think so.
This song is not about dating on your 'level'. It's about dating strictly for the money. It makes references to the chick getting pregnant and ending up with a better car and crib than the baby's daddy by cashing in those child support checks. Then find out its not even his.

It's specifically talking about women who are only after the cash.

Hey...I may have a spot opening up for "other woman" in case you're *puts hand to earpiece* wait...i'm getting a news bulletin...oh, excuse me....disregard that last sentence.

I just had to laugh out loud at that. I'm not black, but I grew up in the ghetto. I even went to the same high school as Snoop Dogg. It was in the inner-city of the LBC.

:) Thanks WS. Yeah there are chicks like that but do they seriously end up driving nicer cars and living in great places? I'm thinking most single mothers aren't doing so well and if that was the case we'd have a lot less poverty. Most of these dudes skip out on the child support payments. I sort of worry about the effect lyrics like this have on young girls and boys who don't understand the difference between dating someone who's got it together and not dating someone who doesn't have it together being an OK thing to do. Of course dating specifically for the money factor is a pretty cruddy way to treat a relationship.

Again. I'm being too analytical over a rap song I guess. It seems though that it may make some girls think they will look like a gold digger if they want to date someone who's doing well for themself. (That's the teacher in me talking, sorry).

And yeah, as ghetto as I grew up (yes, it was ghetto, not inner city DC ghetto but pretty much "East DC" [PG county]).... I never did understand what rappers were talking about. I don't "get" it. So take my interpretations as just that :) Someone who doesn't get rap culture. It just seems to be perpetuating stereotypes and that's not a great thing for the young and easily swayed who worship whatever rappers say. It is a catchy tune though (that was the most white thing I could have said huh?) :p

First off, YES...there are women who end up with everything cuz they slept with someone famous and got pregnant. There are women of which this is there only goal in LIFE.

Its not that you've over-analyzing it, its that your analysis is way off. This song isnt going to have a negative impact, its telling people to not be or associate with "gold diggers." When he says "leave your ass for a white girl," he's being sarcastic about interracial couples and how worried black women are about it. Its just another gold digger song...there ARE songs that romanticize lifestyles that would be bad for kids to be exposed to but this aint one of em.
