Well, my job situation is a bit clearer now...and a bit murkier. I had another interview for catastrophe modeling scheduled originally for November 23rd. But, it was changed (it was the day after Thanksgiving) to December 2nd. Now, I have to start on November 28th on this job, so the interview would be the Friday of my first week....not a good idea to take time off the first week. They are very adamant about me coming over in December, and will make no accomodations for me to come earlier. Should I risk calling in sick or something on my first week to drive 125 miles back to Connecticut for a job that I am interested in, but is not a guarantee that I would get it (and probably won't)? I don't think so...and maybe I should just wait till other opportunities arise...

why not just tell the new er that you had a previously scheduled appointment and you need the day off, if they grumble offer to take it as an unpaid day or volunteer to make up the time.
i would not advise calling in sick - just in case you are spotted and or busted. in adidtion calling in sick on a friday is sure to raise an eybrow or two.

That's a tough one. I sometimes wonder about what I would do in that type of situation. Considering the first month of employment is very critical, it's really up to you to decide whether you think the other job is your dream job and if you would sacrifice employment for it. It's not like they would fire you in the first week if you had to take time off, but first impressions are everything. Again, if this is your ULTIMATE dream job and there's even a possibility that you have a shot at getting it, maybe you should take the risk. If you just have "interest", it might not be worth it.

I already told them that if they can't make it by the end of next week, forget it. If they really were interested, they would make accomodations.

That's weird that they were so strict about a start date for you. Maybe that's how some companies are, though. I remember when I got my offer they were very lenient about it and wanted me to start on a specific date, but if it wasn't right for me, they could bump it up a week or two.

The thing is, this position is entry level, so I might have a decent shot at this since they wouldn't require experience. Of course, I will likely be up against some candidates who had internships up to the wazoo in this, so I don't want to risk it. There will be other opportunities...and I think I'll just have to give pensions another shot.

See, with me...I took the first opportunity at full-time employment and benefits that someone gave me. I was just tired of searching. I needed stability. It took me far too long to find a good job, and I knew if I passed it up...I'd be searching for another 6 mos-12 mos. What is the job that you just got? Is it something you are not interested in?

It's not that I'm not that depressed about it...it's not a terrible job, and they seem to be more supportive than my previous employers in terms of continued ed/advancement. The pay is not great...I'm basically going to make the same salary I made at the job I just got fired from, but since I'll be at home, I should actually have more disposable money. I just feel that the last 2 1/2 years of my life were a waste of education, and that is why I feel weird right now...

This statement says to me that you should figure out a way to get to this interview.
If you don't go to the interview, there is a 100% chance of not getting the job. If they want to talk with you, that means that you have a shot att eh job............it's your call, but i'd think that missing one day at work due to a prior appointment is no big deal.

I agree with spokes. And I really think you should do whatever it takes to get a job using your master's. You only JUST lost your other job. And you've said you have a fairly good amount of $$ saved up. I think what you should do is give yourself a few months of not working and intensive job searching to find what you're looking for. And set a date, that if you haven't found something, you start applying for jobs that you can easily get just to support yourself. Also, is there any way you can get an internship for 6 months, so that will give you the leg up you need?

ok, i am totally confused - is the job you accepted the one you were really excited about, or is this another job?
1st, i don't get the impression that there are a lot of catastrophe modeling jobs in the marketplace, maybe i am wrong, but if you are working with a recruiter and you landed this job then, maybe you should take it - is there opportunity for advancement, and, if so, how soon and into what position? that could be a key determining factor.
2nd, i also don't see anything wrong with telling your employer that you would like to start on whatever date, but you have a few commitments that you must attend to, and need to get that okayed before you accept, if going to this other job interview is important.
but since I'll be at home, I should actually have more disposable money. I just feel that the last 2 1/2 years of my life were a waste of education, and that is why I feel weird right now...
i'm also confused about this - if you are working out of your home, why can't you take the time to go and interview? i work out of my home a lot (when i'm not on the road), and i run all kinds of personal errands and go to appointments. i certainly put in enough freakin' overtime to allow myself to arrange my schedule in whatever way suits me. i could be flying all over the country interviewing and nobody would know :D

I am reviving this thread, since my situation has "kinda" changed. I originally rescheduled the interview for Dec 20...I told them that after Dec 15, I might have a chance. The problem is, I just started a new job, and I found out that I can't take a day off until the end of the year. And since sick time = vacation time, I can't take a day off till the new year. What should I do? I want to go on this interview, which is up in Connecticut (and I'm back in NY) but I don't want to risk my new job. Seriously, I had three weeks since my initial interview to have a face to face, and they were unable to accomodate me. Like seemingly every interview I've had, they have to specially arrange to have six or seven people interview me face to face, so they were unable to let me go before my new job. Now, there's no way I can go until the new year, unless I want to take a risk.
