View Full Version : Grad School Conundrum

So as I posted last week, I finally got into grad school in the program I wanted. And luckily work will pay for 75% of it as long as I pass the class and submit the paperwork in time. However I do have to pay for it upfront... which i'll use my trusty plastic for. But it's the other 25% i'm a little worried about. My father offered yet again to pick up the rest of it, and any books that I have to get but I DON'T WANT to let him as it'll mean he thinks he owns me b/c of it. But last night just to keep the peace, i said sure why not. If I came out and said no, i'd be called an ungrateful brat and if I do take it, then i'm accused of using him to get what I want. Oye. What I'd really like to do is somehow find some scholarships to pick up the rest of it and then this is a non-issue... Thoughts, ideas, anyone? or what you you do?

Sorry if this sounds simplistic, but what's wrong with taking your Dad's money, and if he wants to accuse you later of using him to get what you want, that's when you tell him that your emotional blackmail car is out of gas, so you won't be able to go on the guilt trip.

Agree. The choice is YEARS of debt or go for free...I think its worth whatever slack you MAY take for it.

Wow Coll, that's SUPER generous of him. My parents never offered to help with school. But they are paying for my electric bill this winter since I have electric heat! YAY!

Well you know what I've had to deal with though. And he didn't have to help AT ALL for undergrad b/c of my scholarships/ and the Mom tuitition thing through her employer.

Are you going back full time?
No because I have to work in order for them to pay part of it. The school is only 10 minutes from where I work and maybe 20 from home, so I lucked out there. I want to maybe try and take two classes a semester, but we'll see. I'm starting out w/ one in the spring and then i'll go from there... What about you? full-time?

Am I the only one that thought this was really clever? WB I might have to steal this one from you someday.

And Coll, it's a great deal. Take the money.
