When I really annoyed at someone, I delete their numbers from my cell phone. It's sort of my way of saying "I wash my hands of you". I think there's some kind of psychological value of not seeing them in my address book anymore. Anyone else do this?

After I helped an acquaintance get a job, had her betray me, and then got fired, (for the whole story, see http://www.quarterlifecrisis.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11981), I decided not to transfer her number when I changed cell phones. It was my little way of erasing her from my life. Unfortunately, in the non-cell universe, she insists on popping up from time to time.

Yeah I do that all the time. I am so glad that I dont have some of the numbers I used to have. Sometimes, when someone would text me, but only the number shows without any name (cause the contact is deleted) I know that it is someone from the erased list and I just get the best feeling of : Ha! They still have my number on their cell phones!!!

Yeah, I delete people if they have done me wrong. I also delete people if I never ever hear from them.

I do this too. Especially when I switch phones. It's like a "cell cleansing" I get rid of the people I never call. Plus ex's go out of the phone as soon as the relationship is over.

Yep. I do this too. It's very therapeautic. It's a way to get rid of people who did you wrong or don't make that effort of keeping in touch.

There's a nokia commercial on this. It is rewarding to delete a girls phone number after you take her out and she never calls you back :D

I know a lot of people do this, but I never do. Because then what if they call me in the future and I don't recognize the number, which I won't because I don't have many memorized anymore, and I pick up and then end up talking to someone I hate? I would rather keep it so I can be warned. It's not like I see it often anyway, I rarely scroll through my whole list of contacts.

I definitely do a "cell cleansing" every so often. There are certain people that you NEED to stop thinking about and, when you delete them from your address book and their name doesn't pop up anymore, it starts you down that path... Plus, it keeps me from drunk dialing randoms that I should NOT be talking to.

I'm awful at doing this. I have a bad habit of keeping the number, just in case. i'd like to be prepared if they call me b/c I know if i've forgotten the number and someone calls, my curiosity will get the best of me and i'll pick up anyway.

Totally. Once I started dating, I figured out pretty quickly that I had to get rid of those dudes' numbers.

this is me. I'll leave it in for a while because I know if they call I probably won't recognize the number. I do tend to change thier names to Do Not Answer, or Dumbass, or whatever little nickname I've been calling them. Then after a while I will delete them.

I am way too lazy to bother with deleting people. Plus, I have like 3 people in my phone book (also, because I'm lazy).

That is a great idea :)

I've done that with some people who I thought were "friends" but were just superficial. One time, I deleted my best friend since there was a major rift, but I managed to get the number back by looking at recent calls (he was the last number on the list, so I got it back in the nick of time).

I just recently deleted a few people from my phone for the first time. I've never dated anyone, so no old SO's, but I've had a lot of crud build up from calling people for a couple craigslist ads. I did it for a very practical reason — it's a lot easier to autocomplete someone's name or scroll through them manually if you have fewer names :D

I change the name to "dumbass" but I put a "Z" before it. That way it shows up at the bottom of the contact list rather than appearing right after "David". z-dumbass, z-dont answer

That's a good idea...unless most of your contacts are named Zach, Zoe, and Zsa Zsa. I think just "dumbass" works fine with me...since it could be any old dumbass...

Once a year I go through my cell phone and write any new numbers I've added that year in my old-fashioned paper address book. Then I delete anyone I haven't talked to in the past year. They're not in my cell, but I have their number if I need it.
