No interview.
The problem would be that i have no experience in features. Fantastic. I'm not sure how I can change that with my current job. I'm a government reporter that wants to be a features reporter. Something went horribly wrong when i took this job. I think i screwed myself over forever.

Hey, I was a sports reporter that would have rather been doing features too. But when you start in sports reporting I think you pigeonhole yourself in that realm and nothing else. Now I'm a paginator - not exactly my dream journalism job, it's more like something to take that pays the bills and gets me out of sports, and that wasn't what I had in mind when I majored in journalism. So I feel for you.
I wonder if it's possible to do some features freelance and get more clips that way, if that would help at all.

sounds like the classic case of you have no expereince, so you can't get this job - and because you can't get the job - you can't get the expereince.....

The grass is always greener. I get to to do features a ton, which I love (I choose to do more feature writing than any other kind), but to get that kind of flexibility, I have to be at a very small paper.

it sucks becuase I'm consistantly getting the same response: "You have a ton of talent and fantastic clips for your age, but your experience in features seems to be lacking. Other people that have applied have a few more years of experience on them, so we've decided to go with them."
GAH. I'm trying my best to freelance work, etc etc, but it's so damned hard. Right now, I have three pieces that were published here that I like, and a few from college, but I HATE sending in college pieces becuase it LOOKS like I'm inexperienced, which I'm not. I know I'm talented, i just need someone to have faith in me!

I'm sorry, Kim. :(
I am also a features writer at heart, and luckily I get to do a fair amount of them along with all the government reporting. Can you freelance on the side to get some more clips?
*hugs* You'll get the job of your dreams, chica. Hang in there.
