View Full Version : John Lennon
Just sort of FYI
Today is the 25th anniversary of the day John Lennon was shot.
I was so dissappointed when I started listening to the Beatles as a little kid and found out that my favorite singer was killed the year before I was born. :( I think he was a brilliant, inspired artist.

yeah, tis hard to believe. When I was little I used to make fun of my mother for the Beatles; that is until I actually listened to them :). A great talent cut down way too early.

Time for a Bill Hicks quote:
The world is like a ride at an amusement park. It goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey – don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride ..." And we ... kill those people. Ha ha, "Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. Jesus murdered; Martin Luther King murdered; Malcolm X murdered; Gandhi murdered; John Lennon murdered; Reagan ...... wounded.

So am I the only one who thinks John Lennon was overrated? I mean, it sucks that he died, but he was a rock star, not Jesus or Ghandi.

Nope, I think he was overrated too. Point still stands though.... not nearly as overrated as Reagan. :D

Zing! That one had some stank on it.
Not to get off topic, as I can see this Lennon thread turning into either a bashing or an idolisation of ole Ronnie. But during his huge funeral event. They had that ceremony by the US Ranger Monument where he gave a speech earlier in his life. Did anyone notice how extremely phallic that thing was.

Am I just a victim of a dirty mind? Its worse than the washington monument because those slabs on the side seem like balls. They were trying to have this poignant and pious moment and I kept laughing at the backdrop of a giant stone dick glaring in the sunset. How can I be expected to mourne at a time like that? Lets gather around the giant stone cock, hold hands and say a little prayer. "Oh lord, we gather around this giant penis to honor the memory of a fallen president. He always liked this monument and if Sigmund Freud were here I'm sure he'd have an explanation."
Alright, back to Lennon. I too am not a huge fan of the Beatles. But I like Lennons view of the world. So I appreciate the artist more than the art form. Kind of like DaVinci. He was much more interesting than his art.
I was gonna say.... he was way more than a "rock star." I recently wentoto an exhibit of his art work, and there's a certain simplistic brilliance to his work. I guess I really respect him most for the view he had on the world. His artwok really reflected to me a sense of peace and a childlike joy about life. To me he's definitely a cultural icon.

He was definitely more than just a rock star. Rock stars do not do what he did. He was a major part in a band that changed culture drastically. He opened people's minds to many different things and causes. He was "bigger than Jesus" but that being said, the fact that he was murdered in such a tragic and bizarre way, enhanced his name and his legacy to the point where "overrated" is debatable.

True.
He's definitely become bigger than death than he was in life - but as some quote in the paper said, that's pretty impressive, because he was pretty big in life to begin with.

Benwa - I've been to the monument, and I see nothing wrong with it, Reagan's fondness for it nonwithstanding. Then again, that monument (the one dedicated to the Rangers on Pointe du Hoc) was built because of men like my grandfather, so I'm probably a bit more serious about it than the average person.

I'm really curious why you hate John Lennon. It's one thing to think he's overhyped. But to hate him??

Yeah, I was curious, too. It seems a little overboard for a singer/songwriter.
