View Full Version : BS detectors, how often are they right?

I believe we all have the innate ability to detect when we think someone is full of BS (either by action, inaction, or the things they say). I'm curious as to how often do you find when your BS alarm goes off, it is right?
Meaning: If you think someone is exaggerating the facts, flat out lying, or playing you for the fool, how often do you find that it is true?
I ask because I've had mine go off recently over things that a person has told me and I'm wondering if I'm just being overly suspicious or need to listen to myself.

Not to pat myself on the back or anything, but I am usually always right about that kind of thing. I guess it's also the Social Worker in me ;). My boyfriend says I am always psycho-analyzing people LOL.

I'm usually good at detecting when someone's feeding me a line of crap (but I also tend to be a little paranoid at times.)

My gut reaction to people and things is very, very trustworthy. There have been a few times I've been fooled (most often by giving guys the benefit of the doubt and assuming they are "good" guys when they are in fact anything but...but I've gotten much better about that after getting my share of burns and stings), but for the most part, my BS detector is top notch.

I thought there was no such thing as "good" guys, or "nice" guys, anyway.

I think there is a lot to be said for gut instinct.

I used to be really trusting, but having a pathological liar for a best friend gave me a degree in BS detection. I think there are probably still times when I'll tend to believe the best in people more than I should, but when I do sense something's up I'm rarely ever wrong.

Same. I still am an idealist in the sense that I believe in people's basic goodness unless they show evidence to the contrary...but I no longer overlook bad things simply because I don't want to believe they're there.

A B.S. in B.S. detection, huh?
Unfortunately, I think I'm in third grade when it comes to B.S. detection. I trust people too much :p

False negatives are always more of a problem than false positives.
