I know people hate when threads are deleted, but being Jewish I couldn't stand to let that anti-semitism stay up.
The point of the thread was to have a non-inflammatory discussion on theology verus history and personal beliefs, apparently that's asking too much from some people.
Personally, I think XXDemerXX has several apologies to make to myself and the other Jews on the board, as well as everyone else for being subjected to such complete hatefulness.

this deletion was based on racism and it was wrong. I'm not defending the offensive post, but the motive for deletion was uncalled for and wrong.

Pinky, do you want to be banned next?
The deletion was based on racism...against Jews. That was what was wrong. Deleting the thread was NOT wrong. What don't you understand about that? We don't tolerate such hateful, horrible posts attacking ANYONE. Deleting the thread was the RIGHT thing to do.
You can have your racist ideals, but keep them off of QLC.

Too true! Carol, as the creator of the thread, can do whatever she likes with it. But don't hate Carol too much, Pink-o, one of the mods would have deleted it soon enough.

Most likely. IIRC wasn't today the second major issue on that thread?
And dude, racism of any form is NOT cool, no matter how you try to justify it in some sort of religious worldview.

Pinky... you're a moron for attacking Carol. And a double moron for defending racism. You keep it up, and the mods will be taking a vote on who gets to ban you.
Carol... I'm sorry you felt the need to delete your thread, which I think had lots of worthy discussion on it. Let me offer you an alternative: The mods can revive deleted threads. What if the mods revived your thread but deleted all the ugliness from XXdemer's post and everything that followed from that? That way, we could avoid throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It's totally up to you. The mods won't do anything without your permission first.
As for XXdemer, I can personally guarantee you that he will not be posting anything offensive on your thread or anyone else's thread ever again.

I was going to say, in light of other more intelligent discussion on the thread, one idea would have been to have a moderator delete the offending posts.

I really enjoyed reading that thread until some people got a little crazy on there. Carol, we'll help you fix it, if you'd like...it's up to you.

Carol has the right to do whatever she wants with this thread. She created it, and she can delete it if she wants. Personally, I have no opinion on whether it should stay up or not...I could argue that it should stay up to remind everyone that even though it is 2005 and almost 06, we still have a bunch of ignorant people in this world whose words of hate and bigotry are polluting what we read. But the decision is up to Carol, and if she feels that it is better to delete it, she has the right to do so.

Well, I saw it and just couldn't let more people read that ignorance. I would be fine with reviving the thread and taking out the offensive end to it. WB, I'll leave it up to your discretion to delete whatever needs to be.

Thanks. I'll do that right now. :)
Btw, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is now there definitely won't be an apology from XXdemerXX. The good news is that it's because he's now permanently banned from the boards.

Well, I wished there would be an apology, but that will never happen. But, that's one less asshole we have to deal with. Once again, on behalf of QLC, great job WB, and thanks :)

As long as it's not racist. :D

Fair decision -
For the record, I'm not, nor would I ever defend the views expressed in the offensive post. I do defend free speech and seriously oppose personal attacks in discussion - as much as our politicians seem to like the mudslinging.
Just of the record, I was equally as offended by the post, and by the immediate response... but... it's over.
Fair decision.

I dont understand religion bashing. Thank God that thread got deleted. I dont understand why people have to be so anti religion. I read a little and I was pissed off and didnt bother. If you dont want to believe dont believe but let others do what they want.
People can believe whatever the hell they want, I'm just explaining why I don't buy it. What pisses me off most about it is that there's this attitude that you're not allowed to even question it.

That's because a decision was made by the mods to revive the thread (with Carol's permission) and simply delete the offending post as well as the responses it provoked, thus cleaning up the whole thing.

I have to agree, and I've spoken to stoney about this.
Obviously, everyone is free to believe what they would like, but this is still a community for people to feel welcome and not have to deal with offense and criticism of their personal spiritual beliefs and heritage. The ground rules here are to treat people respectfully, and being belligerent about other people's spiritual beliefs is going to stop. If you don't agree, don't buy what other people choose to believe in terms of their religious life, fine. But leave it at that.

I agree. And just to clarify, people may freely criticize or argue against other people's spiritual beliefs. That's simply philosophical debate. They just can't do so rudely, disrespectfully, or insultingly. That's what's not tolerated here.

Yup...debate...agree or don't agree. But you can't slam people, and you're going to get called on tone and words that are offensive.
I must have missed something juicy...I stayed away from that thread because it said it was a question for Christians. Anti-semitism, huh? Did the secret get out that we use Christian babies to make matzah?
Every religious thread on QLC seems to tread the same ground. Some people attack a literal interpretation of the bible, no defends it per se but argues for religiousness in general, which gets someone else on a tirade about how inconsistent the Bible is (more anti-literalist comments) or how their church/family/religious leader failed them or offended them, which makes the religionists even more defensive.
And then everyone who's upset gets on another thread so that the religionists can say they feel attacked and the non-religionists can say they feel attacked.
I get caught up in the whole deal too, but it's a little silly nonetheless.

The thing is, though, it's NOT silly nothingness.
This is a community, for better or worse, and one that necessitates treating other members with respect and consideration as a bottom line expectation. Trashing other people's belief systems isn't treating them with respect and consideration.

Whoa there, tiger. What I said was, the QLC cycle of religious debate is silly, not the requirement of respect. I completely agree that discussion should be civil.

But I disagree that it's silly. People should feel like they can talk about things that are important to them without others on the site shooting them down, telling them they don't know what they're talking about, or that they're foolish to believe what they believe.

i kinda get the impression that tdko means that everytime a thread like this is started we get a lot of nonsense stuff and hurtful posts. its like "here we go again." not that it should happen, it just does.

I really just had an honest question about what people believe and I had hoped it wouldn't degenerate the way it did. But a bunch of people were disappointed that it was deleted and felt that there was a good discussion going on, so I agreed to revive it.

Yes you are allowed to question it but I have noticed you going borderline offensive including your language and tone. Which shows that you are not questoning it you are just imposing your rationale.
I give as good as I get. You can't expect me to quietly sit by and let you shitcan me. I can't keep being such a spineless pussy anymore. If you cross me, you will know about it.
You don't have to agree with my rationale, but point out where it's wrong if you don't agree with it.

Probally the exact reason I didn't read very much of it, and missed the craziness. But if someone was being nasty from the sound of it, then I'm guessing the mods did exactly what needed to be done.

Look, nobody's trying to stop you from believing what you believe. I'm fully aware of the fact that these discussions go in circles, that I'll never be able to convince you of anything I say, just like you'll never be able to convert me. It always has and always will come down to each individual's personal "standard of proof". Mine is pretty high, I question everything. For others, it's not so high, and they get through life fine that way, it works for them. Do I agree with them? Hell no, but as long as they don't force their beliefs on me (or try to pass it off as science in high school) I don't give a shit what they believe in.
What I won't stand for is being labelled "moronic" for questioning dogma. Like I'm supposed to sit here and believe whatever you tell me, based on no evidence whatsoever. Fuck that.
