Hello,
I am new to this site! But I have read lots of threads and completely agree with most stuff- especially about boring jobs, mine ranks up there in the boring factor for sure, lol.

I noticed that a few of you are from the New Haven, CT area. I live in Boston right now and I am noving to West Haven for grad school in August (YES!- finally sweet escape from the boring job from hell!). How do you like living there? I know it's a lot smaller than Boston but I visited a few weeks ago and it seems like there must be cool things to do there...any recommendations?

Welcome! I noticed you had joined a few days ago, but hadn't posted yet.

I assume you're going to UNH? That's the only school in West Haven...What are you studying?

I've lived in this area my entire life and it's not bad. I went to school in RI and grad school (1 semester) in Boston. It's what you make of it...

New Haven has a lot of great places to eat, museums, galleries, clubs, bars, etc. Sadly I haven't been to any museums other than the Peabody (Yale's natural history museum), but I keep meaning to get to them. Then there's Yale--always stuff going on campus that the public can go to. I would suggest you pick up a copy of the New Haven Advocate--it's a free weekly paper that has reviews of places, calendar of events, local news, etc. I think they might have a website too...

Any other questions, please ask! :)

Hi!
You are right, I will be at UNH, in the Industrial/Organizational Psychology program. I am looking forward to it, especially just to try living somewhere new and meeting new people in my program. Boston is great but too expensive to live in and go to school full time. I will try to pick up a copy of the Advocate. If I think of any questions I will let you know. Thanks for the reply!

I did an internship two summers ago and one of my fellow interns was in the program that you are starting at UNH. She really liked it and was able to get a job soon after graduating. Just thought I'd send share some good news about the program with you!

Good luck!

Hey bamboo- just read your post about moving to West haven...I live there now, close to unh. I've lived in CT my whole life but just moved to this area. I had some friends that went to UNH for undergrad and they enjoyed. Like pisces said, there are always things going on around Yale and in New Haven (I just never seem to get to anything : ) ), and UNH also has some activities that go on around campus...are u living on campus or off? New Haven won't be as exciting as Boston, but i hope you like it!!!

hi!
Thanks for the encouragement! I will be living off campus there. I am glad that there are a few different colleges nearby. West Haven seems like a cool place because it's close to the beach and New Haven is a quick drive away, so I am looking forward to it! I am glad to hear that the girl you worked with enjoyed the program and got a job. I was worried about quitting my job to start a grad program in this job market...but I decided to just go for it and hope for the best.

Can I ask you a random question? What cell phone service do you have? I am about to buy a new phone and sign a contract and realized that may not be smart because I don't know anything about what the service is like for Cingular versus Verizon etc. in the New Haven area. Thanks...

I have Cingular. Anyone I know around here who has Sprint hates it and can't get service.

Coll--your turn! :D

I've heard of some people having problems right by the water with all the services; but i have Verizon and don't usually have a problem...

West Haven's beaches aren't the Caribbean :D , but it's still nice....and there's a long boardwalk along it that is always full of people bike riding, walking, and rollerblading.

Hi,
Thanks for the cell phone info! That helps!
Even if the beach is not great, it'll be cool for me because I've always been sort of land-locked. Even though Boston is on the water, there are no real beaches you can go to that are close or accessible without driving far or with a huge hassle to park. So I will probably be way overexcited about the beach at first, lol.

I was too, believe me!! and i only now live a half hour away from where i grew up...i just like the fact the i can walk to the water every day if i want to. i haven't found where yet, but west haven residents can also get a sticker for their car so you can park closer to the beach in one of the residential lots, although i don't know if you have to pay for it or not.

You can probably get the sticker at City Hall. That's where you get the beach stickers in my town.
