Really! I just don't care if I find something different. I don't think I would fit in in the professional world. I have a BA in Journalism and went to graduate school for one semester in English Literature and I'm going back in the fall now that I have the money(so employable, I know). I don't have nice clothes. I don't have many skills. Bartending is the best job out of the three jobs I've had in my life. Is it a terrible thing to stay in the service industry your whole life while pursuing your interests seperate from your job? Am I pathetic? I wonder if I will regret this lack of motivation later in life.

Well, I am not a bartender, however, I have found a job that I am perfectly happy with. The pay is decent, the environment is wonderful, down the road I am sure there will be opportunities for advancement in the company, I have little stress, I could see myself staying here for the long-haul. The only downside is if I ever move to Long Island, I am going to have to commute into the city every day by LIRR. But so many people already do that already, I highly doubt it will kill me ;). Some people who know me and what I used to do have asked me "Well, don't you feel like you are not challenged enough?" and "Wouldn't you rather go some place more fast-paced?"..................I've been there/done that. I would rather give up stress and psychoticness for more downtime and people who appreciate me when I am able to help them ;).

it sounds like you think it's 'not good enough' b/c of what others think, but you think it's good 'enough' and what you think is all that matters, we're all getting to the age where we are learning that what other's think isn't that important, even our family, i love my family, but i don't let them influence my decisions a ton

If you like bartending, then cool, stay with it. There's no point doing something you don't like. You sound like someone who likes hanging with people and listening to all their problems. So you'd probably make a good psychotherapist or counselor, possibly even a social worker. Your target population would be adults. Of course, you probably also enjoy partying so getting into some kind of event hosting or event promoting in a touristy upbeat vacation oriented environment would be up your alley too. Or how about starting your own beverage catering business? Or you can stay where you are. I mean if you can live nicely, save up for your retirement, then cool, no sweat. If not, then it's time to start making plans.

I know plenty of hot Irish bartenders who moved to NYC without a pot to piss in, and ended up opening their own fabulous bars in my neighborhood :D.
