There's a fire that's threatening about twenty homes(thirty acre fire), and the media will just not shut up about it. Sure spend a few minutes covering the story, but take a break eventually. It is a local channel, after all. There is other stuff on(okay, maybe not right this second). I know it sucks to be the people in those houses, but it's not that big of a fire/story. I was in Denver when they had the dreaded 150,000 acre fire(or something like that) a few years ago. A twenty acre fire just does not impress me very much. Just cover it at five ... or six ... or ten. End of rant.

Maybe it was a slow news day. Speaking as a member of the local media, we do sometimes beat things into the ground that don't warrant that kind of attention. I admit it.

Yup, and if we "don't cover something enough," we hear about that, too. Everyone's a critic.

everyone likes to bitch about the media, but little do they ever do anything besides bitch.

This is also true of the national media. A teacher, who was AP Bureau Chief for the Pittsburgh area, once confessed to me that Scott Peterson, Mark Hacking and Brian David Mitchell were all guilty of committing crimes during slow news seasons. The media had to just keep running with these stories after treating them like such matters of importance. Although, I personally think the fact that their victims were all photogenic white females also had something to do with the media overkill.

Tangent, but Laci Peterson was a Latina, her maiden name was Rocha (and, yes, I know that Hispanics are white). But I do feel the need to point that out, because it's been said more than once that her case wouldn't have gotten the same attention had she been a minority. And she was.

that story was very compelling. you had an attractive young mom to be, a photogenic but unlikeable husband as the subject, and a ditzy mistress.

i think that was a story line on a soap not too long ago.,

plus the bastid dyed his hair platinum blonds. how can you NOT cover a story like that.
