Does anyone know what there is to do in Savannah, GA? I am headed there soon for a weekend roadtrip (a friend of mine is checking out a grad school in the area) and I have no idea what there is to do. I have a vague idea of a historical section of town that can't be missed, but that's it. So, ideas?

My only knowledge of Savannah is that it is the birthplace of Girl Scouts.

Stick to the historic district. That's a nice spot. Just follow Interstate 16 until it runs out and you're there. Continue up the road that merges with it, which is Montgomery and then try to go up Bay Street which runs parallel to the Savannah River. Along River Street are a couple of shops, bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. There's also a ferry that goes along the river if you're into that sort of thing.

I'd advise not driving on River Street though, as it's an old stone road and will shake the fillings out of your teeth. Along that area are tons of tours. There's a Welcome Center next to the Marriot Hotel along River Street that has a lot of information so check that place out. Also, be careful while trying to park on Bay Street. They don't tow on the weekends, but it's hard to find parking there as it's very narrow and requires deft skills at parallel parking. Hope that helps some.

Thanks! That was actually just what I was looking for. I'll only be there for a short time, so I won't have much time for sightseeing, but it sounds fun!

I wanted to visit SAV-town before I left Florida, but unfortunately, I didn't have the time...driving through there, though, it's a really beautiful city.

My FAVORITE place to eat in Savannah is Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House. I think they only serve lunch (maybe breakfast), and there WILL be a line stretching down the sidewalk, but it's totally worth it. It's served family style, so you will be seated at a big table with whoever happens to be standing near you in line, and they just start bringing food in big communal bowls that you pass around the table. It's good southern homestyle cooking. Mmmm. There are lots of good seafood places along River Street as well.

If you're there overnight, sometimes they have fun ghost tours of the historic district. Definitely check out one of the cemeteries while you're there.

Also, if you have a little extra time and the weather is nice, Tybee Island (probably a 20-minute drive from downtown Savannah) has great public beaches.

Have fun!

Are you going this weekend? If so, it will be really fun there because of St Patricks Day! I went this weekend about 5 years ago and had a blast! We mostly hungout at Tybee Island where the beach is...

No, next...so I'll get to be there for the Home and Garden Show (or whatever it's specifically called), which I'm actually pretty excited about. I desperately hope the weather is good. It's forecast to be quite nice, so we'll see.
