Good question, not sure of the answer though. I'll give it a try, but my tastes change so much, it could be different by tomorrow.
1) Nirvana
2) Beatles
3) Billie Holliday (not a band, but everyone else cheated too.)
4) Pink Floyd
5) Karrin Allyson
6) The Cranes
7) Sex Pistols
8) Anet
9) White Stripes
10) Ella Fitzgerald
Now that I look at it, I might change a few around and there are a bunch I'm missing, but it's not a bad start.

hmm....judging by the sheer numbers in my collection and what actually makes it in the car....
REM - can't wait for the new CD
U2 - cuz they rock--and always with a message; like sesame street for the politically aware
Dave Matthews - the boy can sing, good thing cuz he can't speak
John Mayer - he's just so cute and relatable
Guster -Check em out, they're awesome
Rusted Root - cuz it's got a good beat and you can dance to it
James Taylor - can't you just feel the sunshine, can't you just taste the moonshine - a true good ole NC boy
Norah Jones - for now
the Bodeans - a timeless classic

I grew up listening to a lot of comedy and novelty music, and to the Doctor Demento show; so my Top Ten (should be top 1000, there's too much music to limit it to 100, let alone 10!) is whatever makes me laugh whenever I need a stress break. All the post suggestions are good ones. Here are mine:
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
Weird Al Yankovic
Spike Jones and his City Slickers
The Happy Schnapps Combo
Tom Lehrer
Allan Sherman
Shel Silverstein
The Goon Show
Cheech and Chong
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Honorable mentions: The Frantics, The Royal Canadian Air Farce, Madly Off in all Directions, The Bonzo Dog 'Doo-Dah' Band, Abbott and Costello, Mel Blanc, Jerry Colonna, Groucho Marx, Rolf Harris, Randy Newman, The National Lampoon, They Might Be Giants, and The Silly Record.
And too many one-hit wonders to count.

Thanks jku! I adore the Manics - v pleased to see I'm not the only one to include them!
Hi Seren - They didn't even release the best Manics Album - THE HOLY BIBLE here. It was after Ritchie dissapeared and they were about to come to America to promote it.
My favorite of theirs:
1. Holy Bible
2. Everything Must Go
3. This is My Truth
4. The one with 'Ocean Spray'
Have a good weekend!

I've heard of Flamin Lips, Sigur Ros, Radiohead and the Dixie Chicks.
I've tried listening to Sigur Ros because my friend is into them but it's kind of tough for me to get into them.
I guess Dixie Chicks is the "oddball" of your list.
groovelily
10-22-2003, 04:12 PM
The Dixie Chics are incredibly talented, but the rest of country music is really lacking, except for the old greats...Scruggs brothers, Johnny Cash, etc.
Sigur Ros is FANTASTIC live!!!! Its music you should zone into.
Bjork is too, I forgot to add her.
There are just so many great musicians that never hit mainstream radio. I can't even listen to the radio anymore. It all sucks!
Just wanted to add that THE FLAMING LIPS last two albums have been BRILLIANT. THE SOFT BULLETIN and YOSHIMI BATTLES THE GIANT ROBOTS are epics. If any of you out there have a chance to get a hold of these albums, do so by all means.
