We've talked about our top 10 bands...but what music did you listen to when you were little/first getting into music?

Here's mine:

New Kids on the Block
Debbie Gibson
Paula Abdul
Wham!
Michael Jackson
Dirty Dancing soundtrack
Madonna

There's probably more, but this is all I can think of right now.

Wow that takes me back, I liked all of those guys but I LOVED New Kids on the Block. I went to two concerts with my mom & my friends, and my room was a total New Kids on the Block stain. I even had the bedspread! Jordan was my favorite, even though everyone said he was gay. I was a total dork, I know.

I remember I had RECORDS of Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual & Michael Jackson's Thriller. I don't remember my first tape I owned, but I remember my first CD was Amy Grant's Heart in Motion.

On a similar note, do you know that my husband teaches 9th graders & they don't even know what The Breakfast Club is? Face it, we are getting OLD.

THAT is so sad; how can you know nothing of The Breakfast Club???

My favorite was Joey...then Jon.

And I didn't see The Breakfast Club until this spring. I knew it existed and I knew what I was about, I just never watched it.

I was a non-conformist when I was young. When everybody else loved NKOTB, I hated them. I am the child of old hippies, so I grew up listening to classic rock. I went through a short pop phase, when I liked Madonna, Paula Abdul, and Mariah Carrey. Then I got into stuff like Genesis, Peter Gabriel, and John Mellencamp. Then we got a really cool radio station in my town that played "modern rock" from the 80's and alternative, and that has been my favorite kind of music ever since I was in early high school. The funny thing is that now I kind of like Justin Timberlake. I feel like I should be ashamed! :D

Qismet-
I was very similar to you...my mother got me on the 70s kick as I got older; The Who, The Doors, etc. She made fun of New Kids and the pop stuff even when I was little!! lol And for 10 years listened to an awesome modern rock station that played alternative and 80's until recently...and then evil Clear Channel took it off the air  ! I find myself listening to some of the pop stuff now too, but don't like to admit to it! LOL

Growing up my parents listened mostly to country....I know all the lryics to every Alabama song from 1970's- 80's...and the Judds, Dolly, Kenny Rogers, etc

Also listened to alot of Elvis and other various 50's - 70's rock....

I didn't really get into music until I was in high school and it became a personal statement (I don't have a clear idea anymore what I was trying to say but I believe it was something along the lines of F#*k off)

But what I do remember loving was...

New Kids On the Block (of course, so glad to hear others love Jordan!!)

Queen (spent weekends making up a "video" to the whole record)
The Doors
Paula Abdul (again, loved making "videos" to her songs)
soundtrack to Dirty Dancing!!!

once I became a teenager I loved
Blind Melon
Tori Amos (whom I still adore-intense hero-worship there)
Nirvana

It's funny because people my age are asking me if I remember certain shows or songs....well we didn't have cable so if it wasn't on regular network I didn't see it. And my parents didn't like us to listen to the new music...Michael Jackson was evil, I guess.

So I suppose this accounts for my "strange" taste in music now. My friends get in my car and look at my CDs...then turn the radio on...Is that supposed to be a hint or something?
