I'm thinking of replacing my not-so-cushy twin with a nice full-size bed, and I was wondering if you guys have mattress that you really like? I've checked out websites of local store and there are too many choices -- simmons beauty rest, tempur-pedic, sleep number, etc. I'll visit the stores to check out the mattresses in person, but it would be nice if I can narrow down the choices first.

I would just go to the store and test out beds until you find one you like. I don't care a lick about the name tag on the bed. I care about the quality of sleep I'm getting on it.

What ever you do get a good bed. I love my high end foam bed. I was having back and shoulder pain. I replaced my worn out bed and got some pillows that had air bags in them. I love my bed. If it was a person it would be a great lay.

Its important to get the right firmness. More weight, more firmness.

I have regular foam but the Tempur pedic looks cool. However that foam is not just made by Tempur pedic other companies make memory foam beds. I bought my bed from www.foamite.com. Their website has some information about beds. They are in Toronto. Look for a local or factory direct bed maker to get a better deal.

Just get a good bed. You sleep on it 8 hours a day. Its worth it.

The first thing I did when I got my first job was to buy an "adult" bed (I had my twin bed from my teenage years). I bought a queen mattress and box spring and frame on casters from a factory outlet for under $200. It's not a pillow-top or anything (I like firm, for sleeping), and it won't probably hold up over 20 years, but it matched my budget and it's comfortable. Then, a year later, I bought a headboard at an auction for $70, and attached that. You can get a decent bed without breaking the bank if you know where to shop, and go for what's comfortable versus just what the brand name is.

CRAP..I MUST tell you the type of mattress I bought. IT's amazing and everyone that sits on it agrees. It's a pillow-top...I'm blanking on the brand.

Details coming soon...

We spent just under a thousand for our Queen size bed. We went to Sleepy's and tested them all out. I recommend if you are going to spend money on furniture, you should spend it in this department. A bed is something you are going to be spending a lot of time on, and you want something comfortable that will hold up a bit. I've always gone cheap in the past (futon, the under $400 bed) and always regretted it.

But, inexpensive doesn't have to mean uncomfortable. I'm of the mindset that most things are insanely overpriced...you can always find the deals if you know where to look.

True. I wouldn't recommend getting a bed off craigslist (bed bugs and such) but sometimes people you know move and sell beds and such quite cheaply. What I am talking more about is the discount furniture store under the elevated subway in Queens LOL.

I really like my boyfriend's cheap foam mattress. Uber-expensive pillowtops will do the job too, but can't afford those. My original mattress was a $500 plush, that I now can't stand (I think the springs are worn out or something).

I wouldn't buy a used mattress...but I got mine at a discount store, and it's fine. It doesn't matter to me if a mattress is comfortable and says Sealy on it, or if it's comfortable and says "Acme Mattress" on it. I'll go for the comfortable one that's cheapest.

Just came back from visiting mattress stores -- and bought a "plush" Sealy Posturepedic bed. It was a bit more than I was hoping for ($925 with tax), but it felt super comfy at the store and they offer 90-day return policy. It should be here in couple hours...can't wait to go to bed tonight with brand new 500 thread count sheets :huge:

Btw when I mentioned those brand names in the orginal post I was more interested in types of mattress (tempur-pedic = foam, sleep number = air) than the actual labels.

Niiice. I think I tried that one at Mancini's...it was a bit too soft for my taste, but I can see people loving it.

If you can wait until the Christmas time... Macy's has a mattress sale and it's the best deals anywhere.

I bought a Simmons BeautyRest (pillowtop) which is absolutely amazing. I saved over $800 by buying it then.

If you open up a CC with them, you get another $100 off, which I used on a lifetime protection plan.

So mattresses are an investment- if you can afford a nice one now- wait for Macy's Mattress Events. DEFINITELY worth it!

I bought a full-sized pillowtop mattress from the Denver Mattress Company just last year for $300 (on sale.) I bought a super cushy mattress pad, too. I like exceptionally soft, bouncy mattresses. I love having a full-sized bed: it's big enough to share with someone, if the opportunity arises, and I have enough room to move around without it taking up my entire room.

It comes in firm. I think we have medium firm. It is soft..but I like that :)

Once I get a "real" job (instead of this 5-job-social-services-hell I am in!) this will be my first purchase! My 29-year-old back deserves a real bed v. my futon!

I stayed at a hotel which had the most amazing mattress.
This thread reminds me that I need to buy a mattress. I have the sheets and bedding for a queen but no mattress yet.

You can't really take advice about mattresses. I echo capella's sentiment: go to a mattress store and test them out. Some people need a softer mattress, some need a firmer one. Factors like your sex and your weight can come into play here too. So there's really no one-size-fits-all advice.

i spent $1500 on my mattress/box spring. and after an initial break in period in which I had to gett used to it as it was quite a bit higher off the ground than my old set, i love it and i actually hate sleeping any place else.

if it is in your budget don't be afraid to spend the money given the amoutn of time that you could spend in it.
