OK, I am going to a bridal shower on Sunday. It's for my boyfriend's best friend/business partner's future wife. She has a registry but pretty boring, basic stuff like sheets and glasses. Does anyone have any fun ideas without breaking the bank? My boyfriend's sister also has to get her something so we were thinking of going in together on the gift. One of my friend's suggested getting something from Tiffany just for the "appearance" factor alone. I don't know if I want to do that though.........thoughts anyone?

I'm not big on shopping off the registry. However, when I do, I usually do that Basket of Candles thing, or something out of the ordinary (like from Tiffany's) b/c I know they'll appreciate going off the registry for something like that. I've also done the fancy picnic basket gift w/ a could of bottles of wine or champagne w/ a note that says to take their fiance on a picnic after a particularly stressful wedding planning day to get away from everything... Here's the text of the candle thing...
A Basket of Candles
For (Bride) and (Groom)
A basket of Candles that come in a pair
In all different colors, for you two to share
The white ones burn first
They are wrapped in white lace
To celebrate your first married night
In your new chosen place
The green pair is much taller, and also much thinner
Burn with the first company, you have over for dinner
The dark blue candles are for after your first fight
Use them to burn while making up all night
Pink candles set the mood and pave the way
For your first married Valentine's Day
Now, when your first year of marriage is through
The cream anniversary pair, will light for you two
Red candles aflame, both your futures are bright
Celebrate promotions you've worked toward with all of your might
By this time we hope, maybe, just maybe
You can light the purple ones, on the birth of your baby
And just when you thought, you'd put these away
Take the light blue ones for your fifth anniversary day
Now just one more pair left-for the big 25
The anniversary pair that will keep your love alive
Congratulations (Bride) and (Groom)
On the start of your forever
May the two of you always be happy together
And burn these candles
Just the way we said
But please don't forget - blow them out before bed!

I've never heard of that candle thing, Met...that's interesting...
Winney--what about getting something off of the registry, but pairing it with something unique and fun? Like...sheets...but getting one of those linen sprays to "freshen" them? Or the glasses...but get some funky paper cocktail napkins to go with them?

Oh, or you can always do the towel wedding cake thing... Where you fold them to stack like a layered wedding cake and tie them w/ pretty ribbon in the brides colors. I've done this, too.

I've done a picnic basket before then was upset when 3 other people showed up with one too..........but the basket of candles idea is really cute. You can never have enough candles! I also like the funky martini glasses. They are purchasing the house next door to the groom's family and I know they alone will drive the bride to drink!! I am going to print out that poem though. Thanks Met :).

We made a towel cake for my friend's shower, that was a lot of fun. Does the bride like scrapbooking? As the wedding present I bought a TON of scrapbooking stuff, plus a book from Barnes & Noble called "How to Scrapbook Your Wedding".

Then maybe you should just buy the bride a ton of booze.
WHY the heck are they living next door to the parents????

Because the groom is totally whipped and can't say no when it comes to his mama...........and the bride is really shy and timid. Also they got a really good deal on the house next door and are planning to fix it up and "flip it".

I would give something off the registry. It may be boring, but at least you know she will like and use it and doesn't already have it. The candles thing is cute, but only if just one person does it.

A reason I am kind of leaning to NOT getting something off the registry is I know from my S.O. that there was a big issue with the registry and the future mother-in-law picked out like everything for them. I would rather be the cool person at the shower and get her a ton of hard liquor to deal with the trying times down the road, instead of a boring set of forest green sheets.

For one of my friends, I got her some kitchen canisters (I guess that's what they are called) off the registry and then filled them with rolled hand towels in black and white (black and white goes with eeeeeeeverything in a kitchen). I then wrote cookie recipes on little note cards and stuck them in the layers of the hand towels. Quirky, but the bride loved it. And it sort of jump-started her recipe box.

Well that defeats the whole purpose of a registry then. As long as you know they like hard liquor, that's great. Personally, I don't, so if someone got that for me it would be wasted.

Winney, I say get them gift certificates to stores where she registered so she can buy her OWN things...and you should write that in the card.

Well, it looks like I don't have to worry about it anymore anyways :D. My boyfriend's sister emailed me this morning that she went ahead and ordered us a bunch of stuff that will come all wrapped nice for Sunday. A lot of it's off the registry, so I might still do the candle basket.
