How to network?

I'm a shy person. I'm not good at networking. I lead a pretty boring life and don't really have any "connections". Unfortunately it seems the only way to get a job these days is through connections.

How do you go about networking?

Hey, here's what can work - depending on where you live, there may be young professionals groups that meet regularly. It's hard starting out, no doubt. Your college may have a group in your city that is good for networking. Also, use your friends and family, see what they're doing regarding jobs and they can help you just get in the door to talk with someone.

Fact is, when you start out AND when you're really shy (as most folks are), you just have to strengthen yourself and just go at it. There's really no other way 'cause most everyone has to interview, everyone has to build some sort of network of contacts professionally. Hell, once you get one or two, you've got something you can build on. Just use the people you do know now or any orgs in your city that try to help people just starting out.
