I graduated college in May 2000 with a business administration degree. I didn't really know what direction I wanted to go into but I did have an interest in the Asian field, so I decided to work abroad and teach English in Japan. Well, the work proved to be just tiring and boring. After almost a year I quit. I have been home a little while and I am having the most difficult time trying to get a job. The problem is that I don't have enough experience for anything, but sales and administrative assistant work. And i would prefer not to work in either area. I would like to be a project assistant. I have applied for many positions through emails and I've emailed my resume to employment agencies, but I have received very little response. Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

I know it can suck to get a reply back from an employment agency offering a sales or administrative position. However, the key is patience. Oftentimes that mundane position can lead to the job you've been waiting for. After a company sees your quality of work (albeit as an admin) they are more apt to hire you over an 'outsider.'
Also, once you are inside a company, school etc. you have the inside track on job postings and the opportunity to familiarize yourself with the right people to connect you to your goal. After your assignment is over and you decide you don't like the company, you have the agency to do the legwork for you to your next position.
An agency, in my experience, is like another set of eyes. While employed as a admin, I have the time to still search on my own for that 'perfect job' while acquiring some experience and collecting a paycheck. Some agencies I have used throughout college and now are Option One (thingamajob.com), Careers USA, and Office Team. Good Luck!

My suggestion to you is to go and submit your resume in person. ALthough many companies accept resumes through e-mail, they don't seem to always pay as much attention to these as they do resumes delivered in person.
The way things are going now this may not make much of a difference, but it's another approach!
