I'm an independent 22 year old woman who isn't too sure of what to do next. I don't have enough money to start college since I'm on my own. I only get paid 25,000/yr and don't have much money for anything other than bills right now. People that lives in New york knows that it isn't cheap. I was offered another job at a club paying 30,000/yr but they don't offer any benefits. I can either stay here in the computer networking field as an admisitrative asssitant and pray that my boss gives me a raise or take the other offer and use that to network into something I have always pictured myself doing. :huge:

I left NYC after about a year. I hated my job plus I couldn't afford the city!! I moved to South Carolina to where it is sunny all the time!! It really beat the hell out of those depressing NYC winters!! It is hard to decide what to do in this situation cause you do need money to live!! I took a job once without benefits cause I thought it would make me happier. It turns out it didn't but luckily I never needed insurance during that time.
Sorry my response didn't help you at all!!!

I have the opportunity of moving down south but I'm scared because the jobs down there seem not to pay much, especially in something like Administrative Assistance. About a year ago I thought to myself that I wasn't going to move else where to be in the same perdicament, degreeless. What are the jobs like down south? Is it hard to make the adjustments from being in the big city to just I guess being?

I, too, was thinking very seriously of leaving New York not too long ago, mainly for warmer climes, and also for cheaper housing. I had job interviews set up, etc.

At the risk of stating the obvious, please be sure to include the cost of car-- including, maybe, buying one, when making this decision. I did a quick cost-benefit analysis, and it wasn't worth it, in my case. Looking at comparable salaries in other cities, housing costs, and then this big expense, for me, it is actually much more affordable to stay in New York! Although it's not the most pleasant mode of transportation (don't get me started, that's another thread,) the subway saves you a ton of money, here.

Agreed. I think the car is the biggest x-factor. OK, you may be paying $1,200 or so a month for rent instead of $600 elsewhere, but if you just spend the $76 for Metrocard every month instead of purchase a car, which can cost upwards of $600, 700 a month, then it's pretty much a wash. With a car, though, you're gonna need a healthy salary...ESPECIALLY in New York since insurance is astronomical and parking is too. You may actually spend more on your car there than you do in rent.

If you take a job without benefits, you better pray that you don't develop any major health problems!
