View Full Version : Do Drunken Confessions=Truth?

This is something I've been pondering for about a week now and I would love to hear people's opinions on this.
I have a good friend, of 7 years, who just last week was extremely drunk and so doesn't remember big chunks of the night. During the course of the evening, as it got into the wee hours, he sat me down for two extremely long and intense conversations. (about some more innocuous things like job stuff as well as more serious stuff regarding relationships, life, etc.) He only remembers having one of them, and he doesn't remember much of what the content was. (or so he has now told me, over the phone when he called to apologize for being so drunk)
Some of what we talked about was pretty significant stuff. We'll be hanging out tomorrow night. Am I safe bringing up things that he talked about? Was it really the truth?

I know that I say random shit when I'm not drunk and some of it IS true, but some of it isn't.

So then is he saying that he can't remember because what he said WAS the truth and he doesn't want to have to own it/talk about it?

Who knows?
Why don't you just bring it up again?

I have had a few guys say all types of things drunk from 'I love you' to 'I'm falling for you' or 'I want to be with you' and 'I think we have potential for a lasting relationship', only to either not remember it or never make reference to it again, to know NOT to take much stock in drunken (or aroused) convos anymore. :frustrate

Depends. Your judgment being impaired can make you be more truthful and straightforward than you might otherwise be, because drinking can strip you of those inhibition/filters that make us not say stuff we're thinking. It can also impair your judgment to the point where you're just fabricating shit, though. One of my friends finished a night at the bars by explaining to all of us at an all-night diner about her wonderful new invention that would revolutionize the fashion industry...the wooden hanger. What?

I have, and definitely don't recommend it. Not my best moment.
And I have also lied while intoxicated. Recently. So, no, I don't think alcohol is a truth serum, per se.

ditto. I know I tend to talk more to people I really shouldn't about personal shit. some people too just know they can get the 'truth' out while drunk and then fake not remembering too.

HA!
That reminds me of this one time I got really drunk at the bars with friends and I created this entire Calvin Klein perfume commercial/marketing concept and I thought it was the most genius creation, ever. I actually scrounged up pen and paper and went outside to write it down incase I forgot it the next day.
However, the next day I realized it was in fact NOT very genius at all; mostly because it involved a homeless man running up a mountain :frustrate

Um....be careful. While I think a certain amount of alcohol loosens the tongue, too much can make you fib. ;)

LOL!! Awesome.
This could only be better if he was speaking in an Irish accent and whittling at a bar of soap.

It was him, in slow motion, pushing a shopping cart w/ his posessions up a grassy hill while an echo of a voice said, "He'll be running, running, running for eternity"
Then it would say "Eternity by Calvin Klein" on the bottom of the screen.
Don't ask.

Really? Why?
The "Recently." I dunno why but it was just funny.
Don't ask.
Don't worry. :frustrate

If booze could be a truth serum, then well...Law Enforcement agencies would be using it with suspects.
I say this after reading: http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/?uc_full_date=20060717
