Since I am a bit dissatisfied with life at the moment, I figured I would rant about what has been my major problem, work. I have compiled a short list of how the job market works. If you guys would like to add your opinions or disagreements, please feel free to do so. If not, it is totally fine. I am using this as a way to outline my frustrations and see if that helps me with my situation. I would love to hear your opinions though.
1- *** Kissing major ass is a necessity in the work place. ****In the work place kissing ass is NOT only for your supervisor or immediate superior but for everyone you work with. I have learned that although sucking up to the boss is pretty much a requirement there are others who may also influence your stay with the company.
2- If you work in retail or a client/customer related field, then YOU will always be wrong. NO matter how right you may think you are or how unfairly treated you are. In the end, if you want to keep your job then you have to put up with the biggest load of crap for the shittiest pay ever.
3- Corporate America is as cut throat as it comes. There will be others out to get your job or to get rid of you for no apparent reason. If you say or do the wrong thing prepare to get axed within a few weeks.
4- If you want to make money or at least any decent amount to survive in the world you have to give up almost all your life. The dream of the life you thought you were going to have will quickly evaporate. Your life will be the job and the company and of course the company will not care an ounce about you and your loved ones.
Any others….
Sometimes I wish I had a sort of manual to being employed. A how-to manual for all things related to the job world.

My biggest work rant relates specifically to newspapers, moreso small newspapers, and even more specifically, MY small newspaper. And that is that not only is advertising KING, it is ALL the powers that be are concerned with. Editorial content takes second seat entirely to advertising, and this is bass-ackwards, to me.
It's not a major problem with work as a whole, but it is my largest annoyance with the politics of the industry as apply to my job.

Sounds like you need a new job!

I definitely need a new job, but this seems to be a recurrence in all the places I've worked...from the retail business to the corporate world.
5- Very few are those friends you meet in the work place.
Re: Advertising. It is so true. Everyone is out to make a buck so of course when you buy a paper expect it to be 80 percent advertising, 10 percent news, and 10 percent nonsense related to advertisings.

i am going to disagree with you on a couple of points, but perhaps it is mostly out of perception than anything elese:
1 - i don't think you need to always kiss up, it helps to learn about others and be "respectful", however in some cases crappy supervisiors will appreciate kissing up
2 - of course you are going to be wrong, after all your company most likely needs the customer more than they would worry about your ego being bruised. lots of customers are mad at the world and they have not always learned that sometimes you need to make a compromise with people. remeber it is not about you, they would yell at anyone or anything....
3 - I have made lots of dumb mistakes at work, and I have never had the ax fall on me. i want to succed at work, but I don't want to climb over thousands of crushed bodies. besides in my mind it is always better to try and partner with people at work, one day they may be in a position to help you out and make you look good, if you have pissed them off why would they help you......
4 - while it is true that they more you work, the more you will likley be compensated, however the key is to maintain blance, when it is required stay late/come in early, and hiopefully you cna leave early on friday afternoon.....

First off, for a manual check out "They Don't Teach Corporate in College" By Alexandra Levit. If you go to bn.com and look it up you'll even see that Abby (as in QLC author) is quoted about the book. And before anyone else points this out, yes I am aware that not everyone works in corporate america, but I still think that it's a helpful "how-to" type manual for work in general, when you consider coming out of a college environment and how surprising the work world is. Which leads me to:
#1: Absolutely true (experienced it)
#2: I used to work at Starbucks, where even when the customer was DEAD wrong they were treated as though they were right. They left satisfied and we were left with a GREAT laugh for the rest of the day, and sometimes the rest of the week, about what a dumba** they were.
#3: Absolutely true (experienced it)
#4: Yep, that too
