Ok, I forgot how shitty moving is (it's been 6 years since I last did it)!

I'm trying to make a list of stuff I need to do in order to relocate as quickly & easily as possible. If anybody has thoughts on this please let me know, even if it seems really mundane or ridiculous, put it down!

Bleh - I will be moving soon too so I am right there with you. Things that spring to my mind right away are:

- Call utility companies (power, gas, phone, cable, etc.) to turn off service at current residence/turn on at new one
- Set up truck rental and friends to help load/unload your furniture and boxes (or schedule professional movers)
- start collecting boxes from work/grocery stores/bookstores other places and pack things you use infrequently right NOW - cuts down on what you have to do the week of the actual move.
- set up mail forwarding to your new address by filling out a form at the post office (or can probably do it online).

That's what I can think of off the top of my head, I know there are about ten more things to think about, maybe they'll come to me later!

Your post office should have a moving guide that'll help.

Label all boxes well, so you don't have to wonder what's in them...and if you know what room it'll be going into in the new place, maybe write that on the box as well.

Get rid of whatever extra crap you have that you don't need before you move.

No, no. The big stuff I get. I'm trying to make sure I don't forget little things.

Oh, I know a little thing a lot of people forget. Look at your lease for your current apt. and if you are supposed to get a security deposit back upon moving out, make sure you actually get it! (I had a place "forget" to send me the check once, if I hadn't remembered to get on their case and demand it, I would have been out the $150 they owed me!) Remind the leasing office verbally, provide a forwarding address, take it out of your last month's rent check, whatever you need to do.

I've moved every summer for the past 6 years, lol, so I'm a pro at it :)

I found it to be really helpful to sit down and make a list of all of the people/companies/etc that I needed to inform of my address change, because some of them I rarely contact, but it's important that they know the new address.

The thing I love about moving is that it's a great way to force yourself to really evaluate all the crap that you own and decide if you really need/like all of it. Very cleansing.

Good points!

And I've been known to "lose things in a move" before. It happens.

don't forget to pack and load up your furniture.

oh yeah and since you are moving out of your current city, you car allowed to have three meaningless flings. although since you have a life partner, those flings just get placed into the "fling pool" to be used by anyone else who wants to use them.

my company gives us a great relocation checklist (and schedule...they like to control our lives) for moving. I don't know how helpful the schedule will be, but it has some great things on there about moving that i wouldn't have thought of. let me know if you want it and i'll pm it to you.

The best thing i did was make an excel spreadsheet (keep in mind i was shipping stuff across the country) and put everything that was in each box on it. so every box had a number an i detailed the contents. It would have come in handy had anything gotten "lost." and it was useful for finding stuff later.

One thing I always try and remember when I move, is when I pack, put all your really important stuff in a suitcase with your toiletries and a few change of clothes. That way during the move, you can easily find your toothbrush or shampoo without having to unpack everything. This goes with me in my car and not on the moving truck.

Don't forget renter's insurance if you're renting. It's a good thing to have.

Yup, you can do it online. (https://moversguide.usps.com/?referral=USPS)

It's also nice because getting the forwarded mail reminds you of who you need to tell about your new address. There's no way you'll remember everyone.

If you have professional movers, get a list of what items are not allowed to be shipped.
Take a picture of all your furniture and expensive items. Note any damage.
Clear out safe deposit boxes and prepare finances.
Gather all important documents, car title, financial records, birth certificates, etc.
If you have professional movers, to make sure they don't accidently pack something, put everything you don't want packed in a closet or empty room.

Make sure you tell your landlord or renting company your new address. My dad sort of manages the house I live in and when other tenants leave, it's a HUGE pain to find them to give them their security deposit and send them any mail that arrives after they go. That's another thing--do the mail forwarding ASAP, because that is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I've lived in my place for almost 4 years now, and I still get mail from 4 tenants ago!!
