At lunch today I pulled into a Quiznos parking lot only to be approached by two "bonded" delivery drivers (so they claimed) who told me that the stereo installation company they work for accidently game them too many systems to deliver and that they wanted to make some money off of it. This has to be one of the lamest stories I have ever heard. I told them I don't buy stolen property (knowingly...I am not so sure about my $10 "Foakley" sunglasses that I bought in Manhattan). They told me it wasn't stolen. I asked them if it was theirs to sell, and they said no, and so I replied that that meets my definition of "stolen property".

The guy proceeds to put a $2000 piece of stereo equipment in my car and tells me to go get $500 from my bank and that everything will be okay. I tell him no, and he looks at me incredoulously because he though that by placing the system on my passenger seat (I have a convertible) I would automatically say "Okay! I'll take it! It looks so good in my car!". I tell him to get it out of my car and that I was going to go into the Quiznos, and that if they were still near my car while I was ordering I would direct the Quiznos sandwich artist to call the police. They called me a "retard" very loudly...I was taken aback...how can I be retarded for not wanting to buy stolen property and breaking the law?

Honestly, I bet these idiots stole the truck with the equipment in it and were selling it for drug money. I hate criminals...

Oh you right CTGirl, but I found the experience rather jarring...I have dealt with people trying to hock stolen property before, but this is the first time they have been so brazen about it and so jerky after I gave them several reasons why I wouldn't buy it including:

1. $500 is a lot to spend on something I don't want or need, plus I want to save my money in case any problems came up on the trip to KC this weekend.
2. I don't like the idea of being complicit in the commission of a crime.
3. I don't feel comfortable doing business like this.
4. I plain out just don't want to...

and they were acting like I was a fucking jerk or something....jeesh...the nerve of some people...

it sounds like you were expecting stereo thieves to be polite and mannerly......

This is the funniest thing I've heard all day. Perhaps they called you a retard because you used the term "sandwich artist".

Did you call the cops and report them once inside to get your lunch?

They called you retard because their vocabulary is limited. Probably limited to like "dude, fresh, biotch, back that a$$ up"....and the list goes on.

I would have called the police on them anyway.

A job I had in college was in a questionable neighborhood, and I guess people were always stealing from the local K-Mart, and most of the time, they would steal something, wait an hour or two, and then "return" it. I guess K-Mart doesn't require receipts. Often, though, they would just walk around and say "I just bought these jeans and they don't fit, I'll sell them to you for $10." Every day when I would leave my building, I would get hounded to buy this or that stolen property from K-Mart...I couldn't believe how brazen these people were about it. Then again, the only time I ever saw police is when they would stop at a local restaurant.

When I lived in Nashville, something happened to me on several occasions. I'm tempted to think that it was an organized job, because it happened to me so frequently: On several occasions, while I was stopped at a red light in traffic, a couple of guys in the car or van (often the latter) in the lane next to me would make desperate hand gestures for me to roll down my window. Then they'd ask if I wanted to buy a stereo, to which I'd say no. After my telling them "no", they would feverishly insist that I pull over and talk to them. Then I would simply roll the window back up and ignore them. Then they'd either mutter some obscenity or keep screaming and begging me to buy their stereo for ONLY three hundred dollars. After my refusal to even bother looking at them, they'd then say something like "What - you're not going to talk to me anymore? Well, fine, just be rude then!" All this within within the span of the minute or so that I would be stopped at a red light. I know, I know - I just can't give thieves a break sometimes. I'm so rude.
