How often do you get a new/upgraded computer at work?

I'm about ready to kill someone - my machine is 4 years old and it's totally and completely on it's last leg and somehow a new computer didn't make it into next year's budget.

I'm sort of curious how often other people get new and/or upgraded computers? I would think *at least* once every 4 years is average/normal.

I got my current computer in Spring 2005. My prior machine was a first generation bondi blue iMac that they'd gotten in 1998. Nobody gets a new computer here unless the old one can't be limped along any longer.

I went through two different monitors and swapping out the hard drive twice before they finally gave up and got me my current.

We didn't get upgraded computers, we just had more RAM added recently because we are running AutoCAD 2006 (finally!) and it makes the computers run really slow.

Our IT guy is really good at getting us what we need to make our computers function better.

All the faster computers go to those that use AutoCAD and the Adobe software and my boss and the office manager have slower computers because they don't use those programs. My boss just knows how to check his email.

What'd you get at work? Is it as good as mine? Naaaaaw. :huge:

Course, I only had to put up with Fisher Price My First Computer for four years to get it.

They gave me a brand new computer when I started here back in January. It sucks though cuz it doesn't have a DVD player on it so when I am looking at marketing videos I have to borrow a laptop.

I think our budget calls for a replacement every 3 years.
We have brand new laptops and LCD monitors.
We actually have standards that have to be meet in terms of processing capabilities and available memory.
My boyfriend's mom works on a legacy system. That is old, slow, unreliable, just bad.

The turnaround here is about 3-4 years unless one decided to die or the business manager gets it in her head she wants me to upgrade some random person. Or that this fine institution decides to upgrade some random software we all use and then need updated hardware to run it :googly:

Ok, you're a good benchmark because we're in similar work environments.

I nearly cried today when my computer froze and I realized an ad I had been designing for the last 2 hours hadn't been saved. sorrow!!

Dunno...best guess is whenever we need a new one.

The first laptop I had when I started working for my company the first time (first summer), I had for 3 weeks before it unexpectedly died. It was even newish (although just new to me, not new), and the manufacturer replaced the hard drive for free. But, the next day I had a brand spakin' new one (HP not Dell, but still).

The second summer I had another old one (it had been someone else's before I got it, though...maybe 2 years or so).

Then, when I started working here after college, I got one that had been mine that second summer. I had that one for a year and a half or so before it started giving me excessive trouble and they got me a brand new one. I love my new computer, as it give me absolutely not trouble, thus far. *fingers crossed* Nobody dare jinx it. I still have the old one too.
