All (and especially QLC ladies,)
Please tell me what your clothing budget is-- either as a percentage of your take-home pay, or in monthly expenses. I strive to keep mine in check, and I'm usually very good with money, but I'm pretty sure that my monthly spending in this area is waaaay out of my league. . .
Thanks!!

I don't think I'm a good benchmark. I probably spend $400-1k a month, depending on the month.

I don't buy clothes every month. I think I may buy new clothes or replace old ones every 3-4 months. I may buy one item here and there, but never a big shopping spree every month. Even with shoes, this past weekend I bought three pairs (one of them were flip-flops) but I bought those three because I'm replacing three pairs that I already have that I've worn out.

When the few times I do go clothes shopping, I typical spend about $150 (and that's usually with a store coupon since I have a store credit card to the one store I do most of my clothes shopping).

I spent $50 on the three pairs of shoes I bought over the weekend.

My clothing budget works like this:

-Buy nothing I don't absolutely need.
-When I absolutely need something, find the most on-sale flattering thing I can, and if nothing's marked down from full price, make do with what I have until it is.

I don't have a set amount, my method is simply to spend as absolutely little as humanly possible on clothing.

Can you tell I don't shop for fun?

I probably go clothes shopping once a month and depending on what I'm looking for, I spend $20 - $80, mostly on sale or at Ross or Kohls, (much) more if I'm on a clothing binge or a trip to an outlet mall.

I might be overdue for a purge on my wardrobe - I'm a packrat and can't seem to get rid of anything (sometimes in hopes of actually fitting into it again).

Yeah, if there are no needed shopping trips, and it's just picking up something on sale here or there throughout the month, I would be surprised if I spent more than $50 on clothing in a typical month.

You mean people actually shop for fun? I can't do that.

I buy a lot of things from clearance racks at Lane Bryant or at stores like Ross, Mervyns, Kohls and Target.

With shoes I may spend a little more only because my size isn't common (I wear a size 11) but I also take my time and look around at different shoe stores (usually Famous Footwear or DSW) until I find something in my size that I can live with.

I purge my woredobe at least twice a year.

Well, strike that. I don't clothing shop for fun. I will get excited to shop for books or movies. But clothing shopping is a pain in my ass, I tend to dread it. The endless trying on of things, the prices, the not liking how stuff looks or the not being able to find quite what I'm looking for or had in mind.

When I MUST clothing shop, I shop solo, because it seriously puts me in the worst mood, and I'll snap at you, guaranteed. My sister's about the only one I'll concede to shop with.

I'm quite honestly confused at the concept of a regular monthly clothing budget. I cannot think of the last time I went out to buy clothes; it's been years now. I had to have blue slacks for this hotel job, so I dug into my closet and found three pair; some of them must be 10 years old. But it does the trick. :)

Men's clothing styles shift at a MUCH slower rate than women's, though. Men can wear something that's several years old and not look dated, for women, it's more a gamble, because the bulk of the clothing marketed to us is not really classically styled. I try to purchase as much that's basic and classic as possible, but female fashion design throws trendy touches even into basics and classics. Whereas menswear really typically changes much less over time.

I'm the exact same way. I hate shopping with other people. I tend to go to the one store I need to go to, try on clothes, buy them if I like them, then leave.

I'll more of my monthly dispoable income on house stuff and electronics, but even those are not every month.

I'll check my monthly expense spread sheet at home and see how much money I've spent on clothes since May when I started my monthly expense sheet. Just having this spread sheet has helped me budget all my money for the month - whether it's clothes, shoes, dining out, bills, gas, etc.

Hmmm I mebbe shop for clothing once every two months, about $50 at most.

Ok... so I shop at Goodwill. I have a hobby of ripping things apart, sewing them back together to fit me and look different. Sometimes I will buy something just for the nifty fabric. If I go to any other clothing store it will be to buy jeans, or clothes only on sale and marked way down.

I buy shoes online.

Oh yes... I also buy fabric. Though some of the time I never end up using it for anything. It sort of sits on the pile of fabric I have, waiting to be created into clothing.

Um, I hadn't been clothes shopping at ALL since feb. untill this past Saturday. I went to TJMaxx because I REALLY needed a new pair of jeans. I bought a pair of jeans, a sweater, & a button down shirt. I spent $49. I'm probably done for the winter now... if I had more $$ I'd probably shop more, but as it is... I'd rather spend it on playing sports & food w/ my teammates after games :)

I guess I'm a shopaholic compared to the rest of you. After an online shopping spree 2 months ago I promised myself that I won't buy any more clothing (tops and bottoms), but I can buy shoes and handbags, until Christmas. I typically spend $300 a month on clothes. I go clothing shopping usually 3-5 times a month (its been so hard without buying anything too).

I'd far rather spend my extra cash on appliances and decor items for my flat. And, yes, I've got 18 pairs of shoes but they're mostly old. Except for the latest addition to the family. I got that from an admirer who took me shopping for shoes and I was honest enough to take him to a relatively cheap store, as opposed to Nine West!!

But seriously, I buy at sales and at inexpensive retail outlets. And I'm gonna be taken on a lingerie shopping spree on Sunday, I think. And Saturday, it's more shoes.

I bought a very well known designer jacket for less than $15. That jacket would cost close to $200 in the store! I once bought a stunning vintage handbag for less than $2! I love bargains. And I love second hand stores. My favourite skirt (that I wore tonight) I got for less than $10!

One doesn't have to spend an inordinate amount of money to look good. Most of my outfits I wear, I got for under $100.

I buy here and there. So I can't really say how much I would spend in any given month. But I need new jeans. cause my old ones have been patched just too many times. Oh and I never really throw shoes away. Only if they're out of fashion. I send them in for repairs so that I can wear them again and again.

Okay, I've looked at my spending spread sheet since May (that's when I started it) and I've spent a total of $274.47 on clothing and shoes. That's since May. Not bad at all.

Last winter I wanted to get a couple of jackets and I went to Ross and bought two really nice ones for under $30 total!

I only like clothes shopping when they're on sale!

I don't really have a budget for anything--like, I don't set aside a certain amt of $$ for things each month. I pay my bills and then if there's money left over and I need something, I'll get it.

I used to like shopping for clothes, but that was back in the day when I was thinner, I had more disposable income, and the clothes were better. When I find things I like and are cheap, it's great, but I don't want to have to hunt and peck to find things to wear. I'm a lot like Jess and Wilma on this...

vxmike

I don't budget monthly for non-essentials like clothing.

My required monthly expenses get direct-deposited into my "bills" checking accout. The rest goes into a second account which I use for savings and discretionary spending like clothing. Were I to guess I suppose I might average $200/yr for clothing purchases.

I don't have a clothing budget. I'm like pisces & vxmike in that regard. I would guess that I spend, on average, $50-75 (I'm hoping closer to 50, but some months are more expensive than others) per month on clothes.

I dont have a shopping budget but I do have a method.
I evaluate what is in my closet, and keep a tab on what I need (ski jacket, pair of black boots for work, pair of heels for suit in specific color) and then when Im at the store I will look for these items.
I typically buy high end since they last longer. But I make a purchase maybe every other month if even that often.

THe last clothing item I bought, was in August....I was at the Gap adn knew I needed better sweaters for the winter (I have mostly turtle necks and I want to replace them) so I bought 2 V neck sweaters for $30 total.

Things don't have to be high end to last longer. I have a pair of leather mary janes from Payless that I've had since I was a freshman in college in 1995 that have held up for 11 years of relatively frequent wearing. I wore them yesterday.

I bought a $30 pair of pants for Halloween that I'll probably wear about three times ever. Before that, I think I got some new jeans for Christmas last year.

Do socks count? I buy new socks pretty often. There is nothing better (clothing wise) than the feeling of new socks.

I have a pair of boots that I bought back in 2001 for about $50. They're still in decent shape. I haven't worn them since last winter, so I just have to dust them off and they're ready to go for this season. I keep shoes a lot longer than most only because I wear a size 11. Try finding shoes in that size in a style you want at any typical store. Some stores won't carry shoe sizes beyond a 10.

I also have a lot of affordable clothing items that I didn't pay a whole lot for and I've had them for a few years as well. The only high-end thing I spend on are athletic shoes. I only buy New Balance shoes at the New Balance store because like I mentioned earlier, most places don't carry my size. Also I wear that brand because I can take out the soles and insert my orthotics.

Ive had bad luck with lower end clothing, it falls apart, it loses its shape etc. Id rather spend more money for the higher quality and have it last longer.

I mostly buy from Lucky jeans, Macy's, Mexx, Lord & Taylor, etc.

Like today……I have on a gap sweater, lucky jeans, banana republic socks, and boots from Aldo.

Then you've purchased things that weren't well-constructed. And there are plenty of things in all price ranges that aren't well-constructed, and it's definitely doable to find quality manufactured goods at affordable prices. A a higher price tag doesn't mean that something is more durable or higher quality. It may, but it's not a given. There is poorly made stuff in every price range.

Really, it's a misconception that paying more guarantees higher quality.

Wearing an Old Navy long-sleeved basic tee pullover right now that's at least five years old, because I know I bought it at the Old Navy on State Street when I was living in Chicago and I haven't lived there since '01. It doesn't seem to be faded, pilled, or shapeless. Looks like any other long-sleeved tee. I'm sure it was one of those "two for twelve dollars" items or something. I'm also sure it's been washed more than once in that time. I figure I've gotten my estimated six bucks' worth.

How are you washing your clothes? I buy clothes from Old Navy, Target and such because why pay a whole lot of money for something that will go out of season? I do purge my clothes regularly so I don't feel bad when I donate clothes to Goodwill because I don't think "wow, I spent $XXX on this, I can't give it away."

My clothes from these stores seem to last a long time.

But whatever floats your boat on clothes. We all have our opinions. I just know I feel much better that in six months I spent only $250 on clothes and shoes and that I stretch out my disposable income elsewhere - like the money I spent for my plane ticket to Hawaii for Christmas! =)

I'm really hoping to get at least another season of wear on my other pair of boots. I am looking for replacements for those, but in the meantime I'll stick to the ones I have. Cheaper clothes tend to be made of more man-made/cheaper materials and therefore do tend to fall apart more quickly or not hold up. However, you can get leather, wool, cotton, silk, etc. for relatively good prices these days. I don't care so much about brand names, but I am a bit of a material snob.

This is the best plan ever. I wore white satin ballet flats with my wedding gown and I was SOOO comfy all day. Hahaha, yes, those are the exact same reasons I'm wearing flats--comfort and not to be super taller than C. He's like an inch taller than me!

I just went to a wedding a couple of weeks ago, and since I knew there was going to be lots of dancing at the reception I brought two pairs of shoes. I wore my cute dressier strappy heels for the wedding ceremony and then changed into black ballet flats for the reception and dancing. I wear my boots with jeans or long dress pants. Most regular length pants (whether jeans or dressy) are longer than I need them to be (I'm also 5-6, so I get the short length sometimes).

But for the knee high boots (or what I refer to them as the eff-me boots) I'll wear that with a long skirt. But I went one whole year without wearing them because I gained weight and I couldn't get them to zip up all the way past the calves! And those boots even have an elastic material on them too!

You guys are too funny.

I LOVE pointy toe and thin heel boots! My last pair was super comfortable but it dying. But as much as I need a new pair I am trying to hold off on buying them as long as I can because it's not really something I terribly need. I am also the type who would just buy one tall boot so that I can wear them with skirts and with pants. One universal boot!

In my closet I have all sorts of random things - clothes that cost me $4.99 to $200, and sizes in small to extra large.

Oh and I don't always shop like crazy. I can go from spending $0 on clothes one month to $500 the next (but $500 is very very extreme for me and a rare occurance). My clothing store choices range from Target to Banana Republic. I think BR is the most I'll spend on clothes.

Before this gets back on topic, can I ask a quick (and probably stupid sounding) question to boot wearers?

If you live somewhere that gets cold over winter (temperatures in the teens and lower) with snow and stuff, do you wear these boots outside? I love cute boots and made the mistake of thinking I could walk around in them in the snow when I visited a cold city. Do you wear winter boots then change into cute boots when you get to your destination?

I have a pair of biker boots that I wear to work in the winter and change into my regular shoes/boots when I get to work. Everyone I've worked with has thought I'm crazy, but they've got great traction and don't have to worry about having wet socks/cold feet for the rest of the day.

LOLOLOLOL

DO NOT wear "cute" boots in the snow and/or ice. You will slip and fall, and probably get frostbite. They are not waterproof nor warm.

If I'm going just from the car into a bar, I'll wear 'em. But if I'm going for a walk and I'm not sure how long I'll be out for--I wear snow boots. I really don't give a sh*t what people think about my shoes, because I'm not the dumbass falling down on the ice. I also get cuter looking snow boots.

This type of behavior (changing from practical to cute shoes) is common of commuters (especially those on public transportation) around where I live (but particularly people going into the city) year round. In July you'll see gobs of women in nice dressy outfits and white sneakers on the metro. In Junuary, it'll be cold-weather boot types of shoes. They change when they get to the office.

It depends. If I'm going to be spending considerable time walking in snow, I'd wear snow boots. If I'm really only going to be outside from the time it takes to get to the car and destination X and it happens to be snowing, I'll just wear my regular boots or shoes. It's the same as when I had to ride the bus or train and then walk a mile to get to my former job...I'd wear suitable shoes to make the walk, and carry my dressier shoes if I was wearing them, in my bag to change into.

For non-snowboots, I tend to only buy ones that can handle moving around in snowy weather (i.e. no spindly heels). Partial reason for the quest for chunky heels. Also no slippery soles.

I usually do some sort of "hiking boot" for winter boots, although a good sneaker generally works just fine too. Also, as far as just walking to work and running errands and such, any decent, practical pair of shoes will do fine, as they do tend to shovel/plow walkways.

Mexx is a store on 5th avenue in NYC.

As far as quality....Ive found that Old Navy, Gap, American Eagle.....they used to have good quality clothing, now its really thin and not well made so I wont shop there.

Also when Im looking for work clothes, Im looking for well tailored clothes, and sturdy well made shoes.....so I do shell out a bit more than if I was going to Kohls, target etc (but I go there for workout or beach wear stuff). Its not unheard of for me to drop $150 on a blazer, or $80 on a dress shirt.

Yeah recently it just feels like Gap clothing is so thin and flimsy----I always pick up and test out fabrics in my hand..if they feel thin and low quality, not even going to bother with it.

I once got a wool coat from Gap.....the threads werent finished, and the lining started to pull out and then the pockets got holes only after a few times wearing it.
So I wont bother with their jackets either.

They used to be pretty high end and well made-----now eveything seems cheap and ill fitting.

I hate that women's sizes are just random numbers. It makes it such a pain to find clothing that fits, since you have to try on half a dozen various sizes to find what actually fits you. I wish it was like men's clothing. If you're a 32 waist, you find a pair of 32 waist pants and you're done.

Yeah, that's what the article was saying. (And I kinda makes sense. If you purchase patterns, you have to buy the size based on measurements. Like, seriously, when I was an off-the-rack 6, I'd have to buy for a 12 so that the clothes would fit. Because apparently, women's sizes used to pegged to measurements, and now it's more or less "whatever.")

I love how it's OK for a guy to be bigger, but not a girl.

Unless my pelvis is broken, bone fragments are removed, and reset, I'll never stretch anything smaller than a 16 across my hips. I went from kids' sizes to a 16 in junior high, when my hips broadened.

Yeah pretty much me too...

I love when people say they have hips, but are built like sticks. Those aren't hips, sweeties. Hips are somehing that you can actually rest your hands on, in that indentation at your waistline.

People's perceptions of a particular build are always interesting.

I was talking with somebody the other day about women professing to have "ghetto booty" who do not have large asses in any way, shape, or form. My sister in law is one.

Yes they fit over hips! My hips arent close to my waist either…and these are really the only jeans I have found that fit me properly and don’t bulge or expose my butt like other jeans that supposedly fit will.

My friend who NEVER finds pants that work for her (she is very boxy) went with me, and she tried on probably 10 pairs, found one that worked for her, gave her shape, slimmed her down and now they are her favorite pants.

I have the same issues with pants…I have a long lean torso, but short legs and hips….I can wear anything from a size 2 - 12 depending on the store, cut and type of pants. It sucks…..but once I find somewhere that has something that works, I go back and keep buying.

That’s why I was so excited about Lucky. Sure the first pair I bought I paid $136…..but once I heard about the sale…I can wait until they are having a sale and get 2 pairs for the price of one (just about)

LOL seriously. Having a butt is one thing. An ass is something else. A ghetto booty is quite another. I'd say I'm between an ass and a ghetto booty.

Just because people have some fat/muscle/etc around their gluteus maximus region does NOT mean they have a ghetto booty! You're supposed to have some padding there!

Yup, women butts aren't usually flat. My mom's is, and she hates it. She calls it "old man" ass.

I have no bum, and I call it "droopy butt", because it doesn't fill out the pants so they just kind of hang back there :/

i once went on a date w/ a guy who's ass was so flat it was INVERTED. the material on the back of his pants would literally flap in the wind if he was standing up. poor guy.

I can't imagine a world where I have extra material of any kind in the back of my drawers. This is inconceivable to me.

LOL, well everyone is made differently. I was coined "droopy butt" in college when my roommates saw me wearing men's boxer shorts. Now those things REALLY droop!

Same here, that tends to be the one place my pants are the tightest. I once had to go through all my pants/skirts/etc and get rid of a bunch cuz my ass had gotten so much bigger, lol, which upset me slightly, till an old friend of mine from college (male) while visiting me, said "your ass has gotten significantly better since college" :huge:

Mine too! I have asian ass!

It's hard finding pants that fit because
a. I have no hips
b. I have no ass
c. I am short!
d. I have a belly

So everything I try on ends up being tight in the stomach if I want it to fit right in my butt and hips, or too big in the hip/butt region if I don't want my stomach to be cut off. OH and in either situation the pants are too long. And petite sizes are too short. :madder:
