I am looking for a really nice dress. What are good stores to go to? What are good fabrics, designers?

What's the occassion? Where do you live (weather-wise)? When do you need it for? Do you want long, short, strapless, sleeveless, etc?

How much are you looking to spend? What kind of dress? Formal? Cocktail?
EDIT: While I have ordered some from catalogs, I prefer to actually go and try them on. Actually, I used to love just going into a dress shop (like Group USA) and trying on lots of different dresses for fun. But I'm weird, I know.
I just bought a fabulous little black dress from Macy's, and tried on another that I really liked (but had no excuse to buy).
I have also bought dresses from Jessica McClintock, which I love (but don't have a store near me).
JC Penney also (perhaps surprisingly) sometimes has really nice dresses.

My favorite of cocktail dress/little black dress type dresses I've owned have come from Marshall Field's (now Macy's).

If you can justify the expense, Ann Taylor, J Crew, and Nordstrom have nice dresses too.

Strawbridge and Jessica McClintock are good for evening wear.
Strawbridge also has some cute drapy dresses. You could always check good will if you are on a budget. You'd be surprised how many evening gowns and nice dresses have never been worn and taken to the Goodwills/Salvation armys!
Hope this helped!

Cocktail dress.
BF is taking me out to a really, really nice restaurant for our anniversary. There is a company holiday party and probably few weddings I can wear it to.
I don't really have a budget. $150? The most important thing is looking hot. I don't mind spending a lot for quality and good fabric.
The dresses I have aren't really that great. They look good on me, but the material is pretty average. Think Dillard's Jr dresses. (Didn't pay full price though...$70 for those dresses is a rip off).

My favorite of my cocktail dresses was only about $75 on sale. I think it was a regularly $150 or thereabouts dress.

Take a day and go to a few shops. Try stuff on and see what you like. The shops already mentioned would be a good place to start.

I would go to bloomingdales and anthropologie. My fave designer is Marc Jacobs - maybe look at DVF dresses as well.

Id go with a bright silk and chiffon halter top dress......easy to wear a wrap with or a shall or sweater to keep warm.
I bought 2 for weddings, anneversary dinner, and company parties. One in Aqua, the other in a bright lime green.

Macy's is good for this. You could go juniors, or also get a lot of nice stuff in women's and in the designer sections depending on your build and all that good stuff.

Black and White
Do you mean White House | Black Market? They have GREAT dresses. I think you can order online, too.

OOOO Yes! Also, Intermix, Saks, Bloomies, Barney's, and Bergdorff.
I can barely afford anything in these places but it is always fun to try things on. Occassionally you do run into some great sales, though.

Not sure. The other day I noticed that they just opened. It says Black & White or White & Black on the awning and some other words I didn't make out bc I was in a rush.

It's a great store for petites. (Thought I'd mentioned that, MollyMe, because you mentioned you are fairly petite.) You can order online, I believe. They have classy stuff that doesn't cost a ton of money, and can be worn to many different events. Of course, my favorite colors of clothing are black, white, and red...so there's an obvious reason why I'm biased toward a store that sells all their clothing in shades of black and white.

Don't go to Nordstrom. Most likely its already been worn. Since they take back worn stuff and put it right back out on the floor.

nice!
do you have a zara near you? i love their dresses. i second whoever said white house black market. if you want a dress no one has and are willing to spend, you could check out little local boutiques. also you never know if marshalls or tj maxx or cohoes will have something... at least for shoes.

Newport News has some very nice dresses as well, great prices and you can order online or catalog. But I do think the catalog might have more stuff in them.
I seen some nice stuff in Bebe's online store but the prices are  But when they have a sale you can make out
Someone already mentioned White House | Black Market and they do have some really nice stuff in there.
Lastly, Victoria Secret's has some very nice clothes as well. I'm on the fence about the quality but I did buy 1 outfit from there and it has lasted me for years. I would try to get the catalog before shopping online because sometimes the stuff in the catalog isn't online. I ended up lucking out on this nice dress because I accidently tossed the catalog and the dress wasn't online. The catalog was new too but for some reason the dress wasn't listed.
