Well it's Christmas time in the stores/movie theaters/whatever, and I'm tired of it. There should be some rule that bans anything to do with Christmas until Thanksgiving is over with. I was grocery shopping at Target on Halloween, and they were putting up the Christmas stuff. I'm tempted to not even put up a tree this year. Are you tired of the early Christmas at places, or is it just me?

This is Scrooge signing off. :)

They have back to school sales now on the Fourth of July. The reasons are simply $, $ and $$$$$.

:googly: I went looking for mittens today, and saw 2 pairs in the store. Looks like it's "spring shopping season" already...

Call me Scrooge too. My hometown has ALREADY installed all the lit-up Christmas wreaths on every light pole on the main streets in town.

I agree with banning Christmas before Thanksgiving. I quit doing a tree when my parents told me I couldn't have a real tree anymore. Christmas to me is a smelly, sappy, flammable six-foot Georgia pine, not some Chinese-made plastic piece of shit. Fuck that noise!

I work across the street from the Federal Plaza in Chicago where the ugly scuplture is and they are already preparing for the Christmas tree just days after taking down the Halloween thing that the city of Chicago does. Also, there's already a radio station playing Christmas music non stop until Christmas Day and it's not even Black Friday yet.

I can't stand the early Christmas stuff especially since I'm busy knitting scarves for gifts. Too soon for me.

We went out to this diner last night and they already had Christmas murals painted in all the windows. It seems to get earlier and earlier every year.

How bout I'm just plain tired of Xmas, in general? I like Thanksgiving. I'm over Xmas. Its expensive and there's WAY too much work involved. Besides, its a kid's holiday anyway.

I can see it now:

"Mommy, is it Christmas yet?"
"No, sweetie... it's Columbus day."
"well, how many more days till Christmas?"

see when you mention entire family it's going to interesting in my family this year because of a huge fallout during my grandma's illness with my mom and aunt. The fallout related to holidays has already occurred because we're not in town for Thanksgiving but instead going up to Door County. Christmas should be just as interesting because my mom won't host a holiday for aunt anymore and we tend to host them and very well. I'll probably see my aunt at my brother's Christmas party at his house. Also, my mom basically encouraged me not to give my aunt or cousins gifts. So, the family thing is messed up right now for the holiday season.

That's not fun. Stuff like that usually blows over in a few years though.

ETA: I don't know what went down, but if certain people/persons aren't "in the wrong" and/or you feel you have no reason to be mad at them, I'd carry on as normal with them.

I stopped talking to my cousin a year ago, but her mom (my aunt) still treats me the same as always, has only brought up our falling out once, and it's really meant a lot to me.

Driving down my road this afternoon after work, I see my neighbor putting up an EIGHT FOOT HIGH light-up Santa Claus in his front yard. Today is NOVEMBER THE FIFTH!!

Can I strangle him? Please??

Ok, I'm the opposite (of course). I love Xmas but am soo over Thanksgiving. First, it boring, there's nothing to it but a meal (if you get one). There no music, no lights, no tree, no gifts, no decorations. There's not even a symbol, like Santa Claus. Its just you sitting to dinner with your family. Where's the bells and whistles? :0

They have been playing Christmas music on some of the radio stations here since Halloween. I only like to listen to Christmas music on the radio on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This is overkill.

Yeah, Idon't love Thanksigiving -- I think the food is boring. It all looks so blah and boring on your plate.

November 1st is official Christmas Music Day in my house. I listen to it constantly from then on, so, no, I don't think it's too early. I heart Christmas.

I was in Hallmark yesterday buying birthday cards and they were already playing the Christmas songs on their music system.

I mean I like the Christmas season and all but I prefer to start after my birthday (11/15) and Thanksgiving.

Anything sooner is just too soon!

Also as soon as the Christmas and New Year's decor is done with up comes the stupid Valentine's Day crap.

I'm over the holidays. I mean, I like getting presents and I like the food, but everything else is pretty much overkill. I haven't put up a tree in 5 years. Last year, we did nothing. The year before and for the 4 years before that, we didn't bother putting up a tree, we just tossed some garland around and that was that.

Due to our jobs, we rarely celebrate the holiday on the actual holiday, anyway. So, I guess he and I both are kinda over them. It's just another day to us now.

I hate when stores do that. Of course, my dad pointed out that Thanksgiving is coming up soon and I went, oh damn, really. With the Valentine's Day stuff, it's my birthday so it's the one time that I'm happy to see the stuff up.

I hear ya. :googly:

I have such mixed emotions about the holidays... i like the theories behind it, but not the crap that comes with it; such as overly dysfunctional families :googly: being brought out in the open.

I like Xmas and T-giving.....
I just dont like Xmas being crammed down my throat from August until December 25th.
It used to be that Thanksgiving night, Xmas commercials would start to roll, and it felt like it was finally the season and time to get into the spirit.

Now with decorations coming out in August, its too long of a season and I just want it over with long before it even starts.

Seems we arent the only people who feel like this. Was in some stores this weekend and heard other people saying the same thing. Maybe stores should listen to their patrons about this, it might help their sales!

I saw my parents yesterday, and my aunt called while I was over. When my mom got off the phone, she told me that my aunt had just finished her shopping.

CRAZINESS.

I really like Christmas, but I seriously don't even start thinking about it until the beginning of December. I refuse to do anything or consider anything Christmas-related until after Thanksgiving. Fortunately for me, I'm isolated enough from most retail to not be sooo inundated as some of you with all the early marketing. I have to do a holiday promo for the paper each year the day after Thanksgiving, and it's actually hard around here to find stuff that's all "holiday-ed out" yet for my promo pictures. So that's actually pretty nice.

My family has done a lot in recent years to simplify Christmas, and make it more about just being together as a family, which keeps things nice.

I'm really big on the Thanksgiving holiday too. It's not even about the food (though I'm one to eat a lot of it). I just like hanging out with my extended family for a day just goofing off and catching up on things. It's great.

Personally, I think Christmas comes after Thanksgiving, so let's celebrate it then. I don't choose to listen to carols until the day after Thanksgiving. Except when I am singing in my choir, preparing for our Christmas concerts. We start practicing early, but to me, that is different.

I agree that it all has to do with the money. (In fact, I read an article, I think last week, that said just that.) And THAT's what bothers me. I love Christmas. The tree. The ornaments. Dickens. Advent. Presents. Family. Dinner. All that stuff. LOVE. But the level of commercialization is sickening. It's not supposed to be about the money spent.

EDIT: And I love Thanksgiving too, but to me, the family togetherness is more important on Christmas than Thanksgiving.

We used to always have our Christmas concerts early in Dec. (because we'd be home, in college, by the actual date), so we HAD to start rehearsing them early. You get used to it, though, and I never really even thought of it as Christmas music until we actually got into the concert series itself.

I love the holidays. Granted it's a bit early, and most of the dept stores had their decorations up before Halloween, which is silly, but, I enjoy Christmas, except for the part when my mom turns into a raving lunatic because she's so stressed. I don't get stressed at all--but I do 90% of my shopping online. I'm excited about putting up my own tree & decorations this year for the first time ever. But it's not happening until after Thanksgiving.

Exactly. I've been singing "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" since back to school, so I was feeling all Staplesy about it it. And I think of it more as choir music, rather than Christmas music, exactly.

Yeah, I work at a bookstore, and we were shipped Christmas stuff in the middle of October. On Halloween, we were putting up our Christmas displays. I love the holiday season, but I agree that the materialism is too much. I want to celebrate Thanksgiving, then put up Christmas decorations.

They're going to get my money anyways, who cares if it is now or in a month? I like an extended holiday season for a couple reasons:

1. Yahoos. Oh, how fun it is to people watch, especially the weekend after Thanksgiving.

2. Christmas movies. There are too many good ones to cram into a few weeks.
